Ktttk
Is the peat used for conditioning water to make it softer and more acidic the same as the peat used for breeding killies? I am wanting to buy peat to condition my water, but have come across a couple of different types of peat. 1. Fluffy/stringy type used as a medium for growing plants. 2. One that looks a bit like bark and is said to be used for soil conditioning. Which one should I get? Recommendations on where and what brand/type to get would be greatly appreciated. Caryl
I suspect the fluffy one is actually sphagnum moss. Peat looks like dirt with small bits of bark in it and is sold at garden centres. You need to make sure it is just peat with nothing harmful added. Some have fungicides etc added. As far as I know it is the same peat they breed killies in. I am sure Alan will correct me if I am wrong though If you are wanting peat to lower the pH, you don't need a great amount so the smallest bag you can find will do - in fact will be way to much so you will have plenty left over in which to spawn your killies . Ktttk
The Hauraki gold peat moss.. yes, I have seen them at the garden centres. They come in 50L and 100L bags. There was a recent thread about somebody purchasing this peat moss but I think it turned out to be the wrong one.
fishboi
just went and checked my bag of peat and its the Hauraki gold peat moss. i use it for both soften the water and spawning killi for a little while now with no prob. when softening water i put it in a media mesh bag then rinse it to get rid of the small fine stuff before putting it in the filter and when spawning killies i boil it first. works for me doesn't mean its the right stuff i guess. can someone confirm this? Ktttk
hey fishboi, thanks for the info. What does the peat look like? I am guessing it is a fluffy type of material if you are also using it for spawning killies?
fishboi
its no different from the small bags of brooklands peat u can get in the pet shops except ur find some chunks of bark here and there.
Ktttk
I am not familiar with the Brooklands peat. I am still not sure about which one to get.. the peat moss used for growing plants or the peat that look like bits of bark? What kind of peat do the discus breeders out there use to condition their water?
sharn
i just bought some peat from my LFS (its brooklands peat), the bag isnt massive (perhaps 2-3 cupfuls) but its ok for me cause i dont have many tanks that need it.
Alan
Some real good peat for the aquarist is found at the garden centre and comes as Jiffy peat discs. Make sure that there is no additives. Yes Caryl I do use Hauraki peat too, and when Rose isn't looking, put it thru the kitchen wizz to break up the big bits. There is a few stones in it tho that make an awful noise, and it is a bit messy to clean it up before she realizes what I'm up to. Caper
when Rose isn't looking     When you use peat to lower your pH, do you have to keep changing it, the peat that is?
