IOU1
I am looking for a rare fish to attempt breeding. What are available even to import that could be tried? thanks
Caryl
If you wish to breed them you will need at least 2 rare fish Do you mean rare as in "not seen very often" or "not bred recently so not many about for sale"? If you can find some rice fish to breed you would impress a few 8) All of the L numbered plecs are rarer, hence the high price.
fishboi
what have u been able to breed so far? are u looking at any type of fish or a more specific breeds eg live bearer... most the time rare fish are rare cuz they are hard to breed but in the case of NZ we probably just cant get enough to breed
Alan
Yeah Caryl, I think the rice fish or Medaka would be one of the rarest ones IF they are still in NZ. They are legal to keep, breed, sell, swap, give away, but illegal to import them, same as white cloud mountain minnows and about the same conditions too. If you or anyone else locates some I'd be VERY interested, as would some other killie keepers that I know. Alan
IOU1
Yeah something that isn't seen often would be good. I am slowly researching all the available plecos and have contacted some importers and am thinking of breeding them. Never heard of rice fish. I just think rare fish would be fun to try to breed and a nice display too
IOU1
I just want to know what would be popular to sell of if I did manage to breed them. I posted this as an excuse to put smilies on as I ahve just figured out how to
Caryl
A fish doesn't have to be rare to be popular, in fact the inverse is true.
fishboi
yep cant agree more. goldfish is probably the most popular cold water and guppy is tropical. both very easy to breed but yet challenging in the way of breeding quality.
sharn
GBAs are always popular?

herefishiefishie
Caryl, I am going to have to try to stop agreeing with you, but once again I have to.  A fish doesn't have to be rare to be popular, in fact the inverse is true If you like cichlids, electric yellows are a good seller. The humble Bristlenose, will pump out a heap to, don't have to look at the rare catties there either. Theres just 2 examples Frenchy
IOU1
yeah I've been thinking about albino guppies for a while, are good quality ones able to be imported? The problem is my tank of 300L will look a bit bare witha couple of guppies in it  I was also thinking the tropheous species and some of those cats from NZ discus, or even altum angels, the list goes on............ Keri Anne
yeah I've been thinking about albino guppies for a while, are good quality ones able to be imported? The problem is my tank of 300L will look a bit bare witha couple of guppies in it  .......... I think you need to import a few hundred or so when you import guppies so I wouldn’t be too worried about the tank looking empty. If you are that game may I suggest Red Moscow Albinos? :bounce:
IOU1
I was looking in the practical aquarium book and spotted a red albino deltatail that I would LOVE to have a tank of and breed, I suppose these are the same fish you are suggesting. I wonder if there would be a demand for them. 8)
Keri Anne
They are simular... if you want to drool over guppies that we don't tend to get in NZ may I suggest http://champguppystar.com/content/index.php
SpidersWeb
Somebody breed some gold severums already I dont like the green ones. They're similar to angels in habits, I've seen them with firemouths to oscars, and in gold I think they look fabtastic. As for guppies, if I had access to quality fancy guppies, I'd set up a guppy tank. Only reason I dont is because there isnt much range when I look in LFS, so definately a market there if you were going to import some.
