at 12cm hes still pretty young, add 50cm and hes nearly full grown (if hes a silver)

ive heard aros are like clowns in the fact that if theyre not taught to eat prepared foods when theyre young they often wont change their minds. i would imagine worms would be a alright food for them (not sure on that one) and theyre cheap and easy to culture. at least hes eating prawns (which are dead) which means there is hope  if he was one of those ones that wants to eat only live things you might have a prob. i would try and vary up his diet heaps while hes young, i would imagine it could make feeding him when hes older easier. if you get pellets get good quality floating ones, aros feed naturally from the surface i think and some people beleive sinking foods can play a part in drop eye :-? im no aro expert, this is just what ive read on forums. i wonder if theres any home made recipies like there is for discus etc? if he accepted that you could probably make that a good staple cause you can mix in all the necessary stuff.

i think (not totally sure) it is due to the muscle doing something funky? theyre made to look up and when they look down alot (they like to keep an eye on their lower tank mates) this can cause the muscle to sag or something? i think i also read it was bacterial but like i said, im not sure. i am unsure if its fatal or not but it doesnt look that nice.

i thought 3 foot in home aquaria was going darn good? most of the 'adults' i see are around 65cm or so, are they stunted? i thought in the wild they got around 4 foot? i think if they grow that big i might not be up to housing one, thats a 1.8m wide tank at least (going on the 4LX2LX2L (L being length of fish) :o but on the other hand its a REALLY good excuse for a bigger tank...

Not too sure yet, if we move before we get the tank, it might be 10ft.

But not sure how wide as of yet.

I want only the best for my Fave Fishy. :-)

:o:o:o sounds like youve got one hell of a mission coming up how many tanks you got sounds like a few

hi, most aro's don't get to full size due to their strange habit of jumping out, owners not reliseing how strong these fish are.

if anyone is getting a new young aro, float a ping-pong ball in the tank, never put them in a glass bottom tank, and don't have bottom dwealers in the tank, feed a varied diet floating pellets and moth's(live).

you can feed them prawns when they are large. their eyes usually won't drop once they get to a certain size. drop eye seems to be a trate that affects silvers more than anyothers, my blacks, pearl and asain never had this problem.my first silver did,but my second didn't. it usually only affects one eye too(strange) never figured that out.

buyer beware double check before buying(eyes) they are kept in BB tanks in quareentine so often the problem has already started.

hope this is of some help to anyone looking at buying on of these beautiful fish.

shell.

Speaking as an ex-aro owner, go for width over length. You would be better off with an 8'x4' than a 10'x2'. My black aro took just over two years to get to the stage where he was nearly touching front to back on my 5'x2' tank!!

They are also slow swimmers - so do not need a great length like other fast swimmers. (They 'cruze' the tank)

Have you never flicked the light on when you come home late at night and freaked yours out?? Mine could hit the glass at each end of the 5' tank several times in a matter of seconds!!

  • 4 months later...

You can try feeding cockroaches, they can be easily breed in a empty fish tank. If you don't want to feed them live, you can steam them with a hot air gun and a bowl of water. anything above 40 degrees will cause the cockroaches cells from be able to function. Arows love them  8) 8)

i didnt, my wierdo mother did  she decided to test the theory of them surviving a nuclear explosion and decided the microwave was the way to do it :-? she realised after that it was the eggs that are tough, not the parent

sometimes my mother doesnt seem to be the brightest crayon in the box
