meesheelly
Hey guys In the weekend i swapped two of my boys for two of Billaneys girls, due to a my original "girls" turning into boys. This has done the trick and my boy is starting to bulid a bubble nest. Only problem is that it is in a community tank. And my siamese fighter kepts breaking it up. I have an empty 13L tank which i intend to move them into. I am thinking of filling it with water from my community tank, but the tank wont be properly cycled. Is this going to be a problem??? Do i put gravel in as well??? Any help would be much appreciated!!!
Pegasus
Hi there, Shouldn't be a prob if you are using some of the water from the old tank.. but would be better still if you could use an established filter as well.. a sponge type if poss. Personally.. if you are using the 13L for breeding, I would leave the gravel out. Easier to clean.. plus the fry won't get lost or stuck in the gravel. Bill. Pegasus
Usually "sponge" filters don't cause a problem in any breeding situation. Just set it to flow at a nice steady gentle pace with no surging. Bill.
suphew
If you dont have a matured/cycled sponge filter, run it in your old tank for at least a week, but a couple of weeks would be better, this will cycle the filter far faster than putting it into a new tank. But by far the best option is to put media from your old filter into the new tank filter, but this isn't always possible. It's a good idea to use water from the old tank, but only because this will give you the same water parameters as the old tank making the parents adjust a lot faster. There is very little bacteria in the water compared to what is on the filter, gravel, glass, etc. It doesn't really make very much difference to the speed of cycling the tank. Also dont be fooled by products that claim to speed up the cycle, they don't help much eiher.

I have turned it right up to 34 degrees but the temperature hasnt made it over 20. is this just because its cold and its a little tank or is there a problem with my heater??? It hasnt been used for about a month but it was fine whe i last used it.

meesheelly
25w heater in a 13L tank. theres nothing in the tank so i have just put some warm water to get it up to temp. i will see if it can hold it. it is putting out a bit of heat. jude
Check it with several thermometers Shelly. I recently replaced a heater only to find the thermometer was on the blink Cheers Jude
meesheelly
seems to be fine now so maybe it was just having a bit of trouble getting the temp up. i did fill it with cold water.
Keri Anne
Being such a small tank it will struggle to keep the heat with this cold weather. I would use poly, old blankets, towels or old clothing (Anthing that will retain heat) around 3 sides of tank to lessen the heat loss if possible. Either that or replace with a 50watt heater. Seems like overkill on such a small tank and in warmer weather it would be but when room temp is around zero degrees over night and you're trying to keep the tank up to 24-28 degrees... That's me 2 cents anyway.
