Gaza
I found this amazing log / driftwood on the river bank and due to it being quite long proceeded to poor boiling water over it once a day every day for 2 weeks, then scrubbed it with diluted bleach solution for a few days and rinsed thoroughly. Its in my 180 g tank now however it has developed this white fuzz type fungus in some places along its side. Does it need more treatment, could the fungus be harmful ? any ideas? I'm doing a fishless cycle at present.
evilknieval69
hmmm im not 100% sure I have just got a piece of driftwood out of a river aswell. i gave it a scrub off with a scrubing brush and boiling water and then chucked it in. Mine now has a grey fluffy algae on it which i have never seen or heard of before.... Im not sure what im going to do...may just take it out and give it another scrub Rogan

Gaza
Yes, I'm looking at putting BN's in next week and was sort of thinking that maybe they would clean it up without harming them.
sharn
its not like a clearish gel or something is it? it sort of looks like the woods been dunked in jelly or something and theres a thin layer?
Gaza
Hi Sharn, sort of, but definitely hairy clear to white fuzz look to it about 1mm high in about 5 or 6 places along the wood. When you touch it , it just disintigrates ???
sharn
perhaps its something similar to what happened to the pieces i was soaking in my big tank out in the garage. it sort of look liked it was in a cocoon of clear gel, perhaps 4-5mm thick and when i touched it it sort of floated off in a sheet and dissappeared... not sure what it was, sort of like slime but after i shook the wood it went away. this is in a fish free tank though. im not sure what yours could be sorry, hope ya find out
Pegasus
Sounds like the resins and tannins still leaking from the wood. You often see this leaching from driftwood. Solution is to boil it.. then wash.. then reboil till it stops leaching. Bill.
Gaza
Thanks, yes I think I'll pull it out and give it another series of cleaning just to make sure, before the fish go in. Cheers
PENEJANE
I have a sunken ship that has two pieces of wood on it for the sails. I noticed when this was added to the tank that in about a months time there was this white stuff on it. Once I got a BN I noticed it all disapeared and hasn't come back. :bounce:
Hazara
I have a small tree trunk that I scored from the river mouth... I soaked it in cold water for a couple of weeks then hot water for an hour or so. After about 2 weeks in the tank it sprouted small mushrooms (brownish things) with caps. They lasted a week or so then everything settled down okay. Leaches heaps of tannis which is great for my setup!
