JoandWilly
Hey guys just wondering what we are doing wrong, so far have brought 6 of these fellas (4 from jansens and 2 from hollywoods) and they have all died, last for about 3-4 weeks and then just one day they disappear and find them floatinng a couple of days later with no apparent swelling or injuries. They are kept in a 3foot which is about 120L. No nitrites, ammonia, very low nitrate levels, under 10ppm temp is about 26 and not sure of pH but theres breeding guppys in there a school of neon's (about 15) a couple or 3 platties, 2 sae, and 3 skunk loach's which are all as happy as larry and never seem to lose any of them. What are we doing wrong to make the dwarf gourami's die. They are feed spirulina flake and brine shrimp flake and the occasional bit of frozen brineshrimp. Caryl
I have always found dwarf gouramis die quite easily and are easily stressed (but that might just be me ). Never had any luck with them myself but keep regular gouramis with no problem at all.
Pegasus
There has been a lot of talk in recent years about the Dwarf Gouramie strains becoming weaker due to interbreeding and so forth. Mention was also made that the importers were only bring in one sex.. (the males I believe) Many reports say that they do better on their own, as they tend to be a bit timid (apart from when spawning) Have you "actually" seen them feeding.. and not being bullied away from the food. Have you checked for surface scum.. (oily deposits).. on the surface of the water. Can be removed by dragging a piece of paper over the surface. Some food leave quite a bit of film on the surface. LYNDYLOO
Hi Jo and Willy, Believe me, you are not alone with this problem, I too have had several Dwarf Gouramis, and they have all died over several weeks. Really sorry for the losses that you have had. The only way I found to deal with this problem is to steer clear of them, this in time saves you money and heartache. Good Luck with your next lot if you decide to go ahead and get some more.   Lynda
JoandWilly
Yes have watched them feeding, and there is no apparently surface scum... the only that is left is the only one that hides the whole time, the rest of them weren't shy fish and were always out and about. ryanjury
lol my dwarf gourami is a survivor he was in with a tank of africans for 8 months (with the previous owner who knew know better) and had no fins when I transfered him into the community tank. Some of his fins have grown back but I dont think he'll be dying soon with what he handled in there!
sharn
i have always heard they are often disease/parasite ridden and hide it well, sort of like angels can hide worms pretty good and will just die for no obvious reasons but i have never kept them myself. do you quarentine them first? lowndsie
I've had four dwarfies over time and all have died for no apparent reason. Most didnt last a few months. I'm not generaly much of a fish killer but I just couldnt win with them, so now I stay clear of em.
