Here's what I'd do with your little tank, Mitch...

$6 - $10 for some driftwood like this

$10 - $15 for a fish like this

$10 - $15 for a bag of black gravel (I'll bet the stuff in the tank now is "fruit salad" ie multi coloured. Not my personal favourite as I think black sets the fish's colour off better, but that's personal preference.)

$15 - $20 for a heater like this

and $800 for a light like this

Hey, I said it's what I would do if I had a $100 budget!

But seriously, you still have enough left to buy a small light, some plants and some bits & pieces like food, chlorine remover, etc.

tis true bout MH being the king, but i dont think your going to get on well with a MH on a 30L tank, it'll be boiling in no time

you only need around 30W, your standard 3 and four foot tubes are 36W each, not sure if you can get them in shorter versions or not though. whetu reccomends making up your own lighting using normal daylight bulbs (screw in ones for your ceiling). you want the Kelvin to be around 6500 or something like that, i have no idea what kelvins are but to me they are the colour of the bulb (i think it was bill who put a real good thing about K a while back with the ratings of candle light etc).
