HandS
Helen and i are starting another tank (75x40x30), We are keeping to a "small" theme, so far the fish we have for it are sparkling gourami, Cory Hastatus, rocket pencils, and will put in some of my smaller apistos. Fish we are looking to get are bumble gobies, otto's and licorice gourami. Can anyone else recomend some other smaller fish and some plants that have a "small" look to them(ie. small leaves etc) Thanks Shane P.S. for those who have seen our lounge, YES we did find room for another tank

Fishkeepa
Wait, Are you doing different tanks for each a community cos bb gobies are brackish, ottos are softwater and gouramis freshwater. conditions dont quite fit
Aquatopia
When setting up an ideal community you need to give some thought to whether the fish would be together in the wild. Or at least from the same water conditions. Would i suggest investing in a good fish book first. There are some which give advice on setting up biotope aquaria. The end result is far more satisfactory for the fishkeeper and the fish. Good luck though. You have chosen some nice fish there - shame they are not compatible. As far as hastatus corys - i have not seen them in the 2 years i have been in NZ, but then i am down south ! Bon Chance.
Faran
...ottos are softwater and gouramis freshwater. conditions dont quite fit That's one heck of an interesting statement. Would love to know what softwater is Shane - Depending on your lighting setup there's a lot of plants that I can recommend. Will this be a high light or low light setup? If it's a small tank then I recommend a lot of lighting as you'll find that 'small' plants such as Glosso and the small swords require quite a bit of lighting. If it's a low light setup then some of the smaller crypts would be your best bet. Saw your query about breeding rocket pencil fish on the chatroom last night. I breed golden pencils and suppose rockets would be much the same. They require a tank with low light and curved leaves to spawn under. I have mine in a tank with a top layer of Riccia with a large amount of crypts and anubias below. This allows them to spawn and I get a decent amount of youngsters constantly growing out. This isn't proper "breeding" for selling purposes, but my pencils have increased from 6 to 30+ in the last 3 months. The oldest offspring are near adult size now. Aquatopia
That's one heck of an interesting statement. Would love to know what softwater is I saw that too - but just assumed they were referring to the difference between hard and softwater (carbonate hardness) ? HandS
Thanks all Ok so it looks like the gobies are out.. but then thats why i posted here first, to get the great advice from all you guys. The tank will be on the soft side (as are all my tanks) and lighting will be modirate to high (havent got the exact lights i will be using but i have alot of 2foot units lying around) I have read somwhere that sparkling gourami are happy in soft water with a ph of 6.8, so as far as im aweare that fits in well, but i will do a bit more research just incase As far as hastatus corys - i have not seen them in the 2 years i have been in NZ, but then i am down south ! the lfs have a good suply of them here, i have 8 now, and now on the lookout for cory pygmaeus, They are great little fish. Thanks Blue for your advice in the pencil fish, i too would like to breed to increse numbers, large schools of them looking at the sky would be cool. Are there anyother fish that i should be looking at??? P.S. Shortly after starting this thread, i test fulled the tank (luckley) and it leeked like a sive...... so wont be starting to setup the tank for at least another week.. Aquatopia
HandS - how much are they up at your lfs for the hastatus ?
Alan
If it "and it leeked like a sive", I'd suggest that you strip it down, that's a lot of water if it goes. Don't plan on filling it for at least a fortnight. If you don't do this, make sure you have handy the phone number of a good carpet cleaner/dryer at hand. mustcooktea
Don't you just love wooden floors. Our bedrooms have wooden floors so I am fairly casual about water spills when I do changes on my children's tanks. 8) Hope fixing the tank goes well.
