Billaney
Hi Guys I have an electric yellow that we noticed yesterday is holding , i can see into its mouth and there are eggs inside , my question is what to do next, should i put her in a holding tank until the eggs hatch then strip her or leave her with the others till i see the fry have hatched or what ? , would really like to save as many fry as possable but have very limited experiance with mouth brooders. Thanks
malawi_man
leave her for 10days and then put her in a holding tank then they will be hatched so it wont matter if she spits them out you can just raise them in a container.
JoandWilly
I always laeve ours in the tank untill the 2 week mark then strip her and at about the 16 day mark they start feeding on bbs.
Billaney
Thanks guys , i'll keep my eye on them then transfer into a large breeding net in there own tank
neill
hi I transfer the female after 14 days to a seperate tank and wait for her to spit them out. I have stripped the fish but not really my cup of tea. I wouldn't recommend a net trap for the fry in the same tank as the adult fish because they will try and suck them through the net and you may lose all your fry. JoandWilly
If you do transfer them into a breeding net in the tank with the adults put a thin layer of sand or gravel on the bottom so they can't eat them. If i had a spare tank to transfer the female to i would but on the other hand letting them hold for to long can wear the female out causing problems.... exspecially with the ones that dont even like to spit them out after a month. herefishiefishie
Or you can make your own floating fry trap. Ice cream container, craft knife, some mesh, silicone & poly... Anyone keen?? I will try & find link, or will post up how it is made. Found it, gee that took me a while  http://www.sydneycichlid.com/old_scp/frytank.html Frenchy
nickyboi
from my exp its best to remove them straight away into a cycled tank. The reason being that if you have any agro cichlids in there they will pick on her and I have had two fish now die while holding due to bullying. I now remove them straight away and they carry full term then spit em free swimming. just my 2c
malawi_man
in my 800litre tank taking all the rocks out for catching the females is a big job so i generally leave the female that breeds first for as long as i can before catching her and all the other ones that have bred. normally get about 5 batches of fry ever 3 weeks maybe

Billaney
Update : I thought today was the day to strip her so i emptied the tank of caves so i did not have to chase her too much and her swollow the babies and stripped her into a hard plastic breeding box, she spat 15 babies which i thought was pretty good for a young mom only 6cm herself, her mouth was bulging. The babies still have a bit of there egg sack left ( maybe i was a bit early ) so i won't feed for now but was wondering will microworms be ok for there first food then finely crushed flake ? Thanks for all the advice everyone a great help
malawi_man
mine take crushed bs flake or spirulina powder straight away, how big are the eggs sacks are they like way bigger than the fish or like just a big tummy?? if tghe eggs sack is way bigger than the fish you need an air stone for lots of water movement but not too much because it will rupture the eggs sacks
