wasp
This was discussed a few months ago sorry to bring it up again but the search function is disabled I can't find the thread. I'm wanting to paint the back of a tank a lightish blue, just wondered what people think is the best paint.

tel
i worried about this like anything  my idea is that black gives an effect such as you cant quite see where the back of the tank is (more distance perspective) yet the reality is that as soon as youve got crap growing all over it you wont hardly ever see/remember what the colour was and this effect is lost. i gave @ 4 coats of enamel, a good roller does just as good a job as spray but no spray mist every where!! 8)
Aquatopia
I like the idea of BLACK as a backing for the very same reason - extra depth. Steve Weast has black in his aquarium and it looks great. The problem of not seeing it when crap grows over it is to clean it off !! It all depends on what effect you want in your tank. If you are worried about seeing the back then you will be equally keen to keep it clean i expect.
chimera
i did marine blue for my current tank, would opt for a darker blue next time if not black as well. its the depth perspective that is important for me next time as the tank will be almost 3 times bigger front to back and i want it to appear endless... even though blue would probably reflect the light within the tank better than black would? wasp
So any old enamel will do?
chimera
almost any paint you use will scratch off, unless you use that horrible glass stain stuff once painted just be careful with it. do a very light tack coat first. you'll need about 4 or 5 coats if you spray so rolling is probably not a bad idea
wasp
Just I've seen painted glass before, and the paint flakes off easy as. So provided I use enamel it will be OK?
jetskisteve
Bunnings or supercheap autos cans for peanuts
chimera
got mine from bunnings last time, even enamel will scratch off but since its the back of ya tank, you wont even be near it
wasp
OK thanks guys appreciate the help. I'll post back up after the jobs done let know how it went! suphew
I reckon the trick is to make sure the glass is really clean before you paint. I used isopro on mine and enamel spray paint, it stuck really well, I had to clean off some over spray and had to use a sharp paint scraper to move it. I tried just cleaning it off with spray and wipe etc and it wouldn't move.

slappers
buy rights you should use an etch first, then paint it. wont scratch off then
reef
Dont like the black as it seems to draw the light away from the tank, Blue colours seems better.
misnoma
I just used blue backing paper stuck on with insulation tape took all of 5 min to put on, and worked a charm.
suphew
I used to do that on my fresh water tanks, end up being a real pain because water (and salt in marine) got between it and the glass making it look crap, plus the tape comes unstuck after a while. Go the paint.
misnoma
*shrug* over a year and a half now with the same backing blue (was freshwater for 1 year, now 6 months saltwater), not an issue at all. Personal preference I guess
