hi all,

we've just joined up and are wanting some info on keeping discus. i've been into keeping and breeding tropical fish for at least 10 years. now we want to try something new.

does anyone know if discus be kept successfully in hard water with ph around 7 ? or is it best they are kept in soft water ph around 6?

also what other fish can be kept with discus?

thanks

fran

Hi Fran, welcome to the forum. Whereabout do you live?

To answer your questions about discus :

Discus can live in either hard or soft water and at any PH provided that they are stable and not fluctuating all the time.

Discus can be kept with a variety of other fishes eg. cardinal tetra, rummy nose, small plecos, cory, otto... Basically most fishes that are not aggresive and can tolerate a higher temp (28-31). hth

To breed discus you will need soft water and for growing up babies you will need hard water for better growth. Babies will still grow in soft water but not as well.

Cheers,

ron

FranandMark welcome along. Depends how hard the water is. If it's too hard the eggs can't hatch, but like Ronnie (Discusguru) says, if it's harder they grow better because more mineral content.

I definitely recommend getting in to them if you can dedicate to a lot of water changes (a few of us here do 70% water changes/day). They have cool personalities and are really interesting to watch their social interactions and breeding behaviour.
