Help with platties

I have a friend at work who has a 60 liter tank that has been running for a 2-3 months now, only has a few platties in it (3-4) every time she tries to add a male it turns up dead a day or two later? I have checked all the obvious thing's, shes doing correct water changes, cycled, feedings ok. Any ideas??

I haven't tested her water yet cause she needs to bring some into work for me, but I would be surprised if it wasn't ok, since she has a very load bio load, seems to be doing every thing right, and the females are fine.

How many females in the tank?

do the platties know about Desperate House Wives?

Men seem to die quite quickly in there so it could be the same in the tank.

Then again I agree with Kookie... the females are picky or they are amazonian Platties... Mate once then kill the male.

3 females in there now, the last female was added at the same time (last Friday) as the male and came from the same LFS tank. I think it probably is the water, and keep asking her to bring some in so I can give it a decent test.

I have never kept platties myself so was really just wondering if there was a known problem with the males, i.e. if they are generally weaker or if the females are know to chase them, maybe adding 3-4 males at once would help, devider in the tank, etc

Can you be a little more specific here.. like "How many times has this occured".. ?

If the present fish are all females.. it could be that the addition of a male is creating a lot of pressure on the male by the females wanting the males attention.. and that (to put it bluntly).. he just can't cope with the harem of ladies he has been offered and is being harrassed to death.

If the situation were reversed.. eg:..One female to several males.. then chances are that the female would soon pass on from the over-attention of the males.

The other things to consider are..

What is actually happening when your friend introduces the new fish to the tank..?

What are the conditions of the tank they bought them from..and is the new tank similar.. ?

Are all these fish that passed on from the same shop.. or supply..?

Is the fish being aclimatetised correctly before being placed in the new tank to avoid shock..?

Bill.

Has your friends seen the females being aggressive towards the male when he's placed in the tank? Maybe they are just hor....harrassing him

I think everybody, including yourself is asking all the right questions, just need answers from your friend :P

I've only male platties...DO NOT WANT females

Sorry she has gone home for the day so can't ask any questions, I know she has had at least 2 males. As I said I checked all the obvious things like how she was aclimatizing, feeding (once a day), water changes, filter etc. I do know all the fish have come from the same shop, but she has brought females at the same time from the same tank and they have been fine. Maybe the importer has them seperated to stop them breeding and they are getting damaged before they get to the shop?
