ralphie
I have several large, 10-20cms and upto 10 years old, goldfish in a tank plus one common bully. These fish recently came out of a pond. I put 5 oxygen weed plants into the tank but the golfish have eaten all the leaves off within 1 week. Since they were out of the pond do I have to feed them plants all the time, they seem to eat the pellet food but they eat heaps. Any suggestions on any plants I could put in that they wouldnt eat so they have some shelter, any suggestions appreciated!!! Thanks
Tanksman
Plastic Plants might be the trick. It would be hard to get any plant established as some of the fish (10 years old) must be quite big. PS I never did find out where Tai Tapu is! ralphie
You dont think that i should keep the oxygen weed incase they need it to eat? Tai Tapu just out of chch
Alan
A lot of ppl buy oxy weed for their goldies from the LFS. Where I am I just need to go to a local drain, river, or lake to get it. You could try blanched lettuce too. Alan
Tanksman
OK thanks. Sounds like a nice place to live. As long as the place you get the weed from is clean and disease free you could chuck in a piece or two every week or so. It would help with providing variety in their food. No fish likes to have the same thing day in and day out. So yea feed them a bit if it is available. They probably eat lettuce and cucumber and other garden veges to. ralphie
wow thanks to those that recommended getting oxy weed from the river, I can't beleive i paid for something that really does grow like a weed. Apart from wet feet it was a great help thanks. Its not stealing tho is it?
Caryl
Only if you're caught  No, it isn't. Just watch out in case the council or someone has sprayed the banks for weed control.

alextret
>Now I have it growing permanantly in the garden. Just curious, do you mean in a pond in the garden, or outside? What kind of oxygen weed would it be? There are many plants people call "oxygen weed".
buttons31
The oxygen weed I have growns in the dirt. Have to keep cutting it back as it grows over the path. Origionally it was one or two bunches from the pet shop that I put in the pond. It must have developed roots. When I cleamed out the pond it just decided to grow wild. lol Now I pull up bunches with roots attatched and plant them in the fish tank. It seems to take off all right. Ira
I'd like to see a picture of it. I think the true oxygen weed is purely aquatic.
Alan
Sounds like lysmachia, SPP?? Alan
buttons31
Hope this link works as I have never tried this before. This piece was growing in the garden. I pulled it up 2 weeks ago to plant in a small tank which I needed for some snails. I brought the origional piece from my local pet shop atleast 6 yrs ago. It was in a fish tank in the shop and was sold for about $2 as oxygen weed. http://www.fotothing.com/photos/9a4/9a4 ... 18ee08.jpg
Alan
I am correct in what I assumed it was from that pic. Alan
Caryl
Alan is correct, it is Lysimachia, not oxygen weed. A perennial herb, can be found in ditches, marshes and wet grasslands worldwide.
alanmin4304
I see you are in Tai Tapu. The Halswell river has more oxygen weed than the pet shop and it is free. It is where I get it from to feed the turtles. The legal oxygen weed sold in the pet shops is Elodea canadensis (Canadian water pest)
ralphie
I have recently started to use the oxt weed out of the halswell river yea...How do you approach getting it out...when i went i ended upo with wet shoes wet pants and couldnt get very much as most of it was too deep? do you use a rake or do you just have a better spot? buttons31
So what is the benefit if any of the oxygen weed? Are there any particular plants that are better than others?
Caryl
I like it because the stupid goldfish eat everything else so having free replacements easily on hand is a great boon As you may have guessed by the name, oxygen weed helps oxygenate the water so is good for the fish. Plants are always good in a tank to help keep it balanced and in good health.
sharn
ralphie- wetsuit and rake for collecting  ... i used to get my little sister to get it for me when we had our old pond, one day she fell in and was clinging to a rock screaming like she was dying, then she realised it was only thigh high.... yip, my sister aint the brighest
