Drifty
Just got back from overseas, part of the trip I went to Hong Kong for 4 days. I looked for fish shops(as u do), in kowloon are all located on one street. There are a total of around 400 fish shops ( salt, fresh, tropical, tank and stand makers etc) anything you could possible ever want for a fish tank you can get from this street. Here are a few photos of what I saw. It seemed on average the saltwater shops would have at least 1000 fish in stock Yellow tangs Juv Queen and French angels Fish in bags waiting to be sold, this was a very common sight, but only for fresh and tropical fish Shop front display Same again Moorish idols and a large blue ring angel More fish in bags for sale Butterflies 6 meter long shop display

Brianemone
awesome post drifty. its hard to believe the fish in bags setup. in the pic with the moorish idols did you note what type of lighting they were using?? plain flouros? the colours seem to be fantastic (better than what you would see in normal reef tanks)
Jimmy
That is nuts. What are the prices like?
Feelers
By my quick calculations those yellow tangs are about $23 NZ.
reef
Looks like they use floros with the fish. Fish colours are the standard colours no better than what i have seen in NZ. The fish are real cheap and a real problem for the hobby as they would lose many fish and just replace them.
shiuh
really nice pictures there. thanks for sharing. if you look at the price tag say $120 / 5.5 = NZD 22 ???
reef
yes it is $22 for a yellow tang. pretty cheap. however they sell thousands of yellow tangs vs in nz we sell less than 100 a year.

puttputt
Hey Drifty, I can certainly see what you were talking about today, good pictures. How many angry stares did you get  .
Fay
Don't get me started its cruel horrible and disgusting
Drifty
Ha got a few angry stares, a few stores wouldnt let me take photos at all. The lighting is all fluros, no reflectors or anything like that. Suprisingly most the salt water fish looked healthy, most of the tanks had huge filtration systems attached. I saw one tank with around 50 powder browns and no whitespot to be seen. While the fish in bags thing bothers me, and the high fish load also bothered me, most of the fish did seem healthy which is some consolation. Seems like there are mostly fish only systems there as there wasnt a lot of corals available, no stoney corals at all, but a fairly large selection of softy's. There was however a massive selection of angels, both fully grown and juv. The blue ring in one of the photos was easily the size of a dinner plate, I have never seen one that big before. I saw one tank that was probably 6 m by 1 m wide on the ground that was jammed full of maybe 200 clams of all different discriptions, quite an amazing site
chimera
The fish are real cheap and a real problem for the hobby as they would lose many fish and just replace them so true, that shit winds me up. means they dont need to be as careful with their selection, the "buy and try" attitude - your wallet is not much lighter than before you walked into the shop. prices too low leads to people who are not passionate about the hobby but just want to 'give it a shot'. a $150 marine fish that will (or should) live 10 years to me is good value. on the flipside, the same fish at $20 and the "if it doesnt work out, oh well, buy another" attitude followed by "hang on, i have high ammonia levels no wonder my last 10 fish died" attitude and finally "but its ok i haven't spent that much" the one area on dont mind seeing high prices on too much is livestock
reef
The fish do look healthy, but i would say they have been there for 2-3 days. they get big shipments everyday. Fish cant last long in those conditions.
Fay
They probably take them home and eat them!!
benji
Where in HK was this? I wondered around asking people where the fish stores were for a day, everyone thought I meant fish for eating :\
