what is wrong with my goldfish

One of my goldfish (not the same one I was talking about in my swim bladder thread) is in a very idle state and I am worried there may be something wrong with it. It just sits on top of the gravel under a fake plant and stays there, making hardly any movement (the only movement is from its gills and eyes). However I gave it some food and it swam a bit, ate it and went back to its spot and stayed still again. What is wrong with it? It has been like this all day.

my tank is 50x25x30cm, not sure how many litres this is. currently there are only 2 fantails in it, both about 3.5cm long (excl. caudal fin). i do weekly partial water changes of about 15-20%. i don't have any water-testing equipment... will get some soon

Hi djoon7,

Your tank is a bit on the small side and will needs lots of care and regular maintainance to keep the water suitable.

You will also need to be "very" careful with the feeding.. as overfeeding will quickly polute the water.

Besides the above questions... where is the tank located..?

Does it get very warm due to the sun or heat of your home...?

Do you have an air pump and an airstone running..?

Do you have a themometer to monitor the heat of the tank..?

Many fish "do" take a break now and then and rest on the bottom.. but if this is for prolonged periods, then something is wrong, which is often water conditions.

In the deep of winter, a rise in temp can make Goldies a little more active... but a rise in temp in this present heat could make them a bit lethargic if the heat is too high and constant.

Could you do us a big favour and put your location in your profile.

We see that you use the metric system.. but many countries do now :)

Bill.

my tank is in a spare room and is out of sunlight. i notice that the water is a bit warmer in the morning but seems to cool down a bit during the day. i have a filter in the tank. there is a stick-on thermometer on the tank and the temperature is usually within the 22-26 degrees C range.

also, could someone who's really good at maths please work out how many litres my tank is :D

I'm not really good at maths, but I can tell you that in order to work out the volume of something you just have to multiply length x width x height. In cm that would give you cubic-centimeters (ccm). To convert ccm to litres you just divide by 1000.

So for your tank:

50cm x 25cm x 30cm = 37500 ccm

37500 ccm / 1000 = 37.5 l

That is your tank's volume if you fill it up to the edge. So I'd guess that your tank has about 35 litres of water in it - maybe a bit less.

Hope that helps :D
