Well here is how I made some DIY box filters.

Start with a glass box - 7x8x12cm, glued together with silicone.

Step1.jpg

Get a piece of stocking place carbon in it and tie it off at both ends, place this in the bottom of the glass box.

Step2.jpg

Get a 14cm length of any type of plastic pipe and place a piece of airline down it so the airline just comes out the top. Place this in the box with the bottom in the middle of the carbon sack.

Step3.jpg

Place filter wool all around the pipe to hold it in place.

You have a box filter (or 5)

How it works.

Air passes through A and air bubbles come out at the bottom of the tube and pass up again through B. When the air bubbles go upwards they also bring water through with them. This creates a water flow where the water flows through C and D and then back up through B. I hope you understand. :bounce:

Enjoy

yes you could change it for any media, basically they are a diy version of some shops bought filters i have so they should be the same if not better, they are only going on 11 litre tanks but i have similar things on some 40litre tanks. maybe someone else knows more about what size tank.
