misnoma
Brown stuff is dirt bacteria tend to live in it etc, but you can clean it and it'll be fine, just so long as you do a bit at a time.
Ira
Yeah, the technical name for the brown stuff is "Gunk" heh, most of your bacteria well be on and in your sponges. You can't see it, it's just a microscopic film. Apparently the gunk makes an excellent daphnia food...
Alan
And you clean the "gunk" off the filter and sponge etc using TANK-WATER, otherwise you'll kill all the "goodies" Alan
Snowman
If it's an external filter you will find a good build up in the hoses as well, when the flow slows i clean the hoses only and that usually restores the flow, if it doesn't then it's filter clean time. alanmin4304
Don't clean the filter unless the flow is seriously restricted as it only works when it is partly full of gunk and the filtration is improved as it builds up (until the flow drops off too much. I very rarely clean my filters.
HummingBird
The brown stuff is actually iron deposits, from what I've heard.
Ira
Uhhh, I seriously doubt it's iron deposits...Does it stick to a magnet?...Well, I mean any more than any other kind of slime sticks to objects.
alanmin4304
If cows have pats fish must have gunk
