Caryl
Go to a glazier rather than a pet shop

alanmin4304
There is a very cheap tankmaker in Christchurch -- You. I have just ordered the glass for 2 x tanks 1200 x 450 x 400 from 10mm glass and one with six compartments all from new glass offcuts for $235.00. alanmin4304
No trouble. You would need to order the glass now and they will cut it between xmas and new year. At the moment they are working 12 hour shifts to get through the work. I will pm you with the details
Feelers
I have a tank that has been shodily put together - the glass isn't cut straight and silicon has been used to make up the discrepancies hahaa its pretty crap looking. I was thinking about having the glass re cut- and making a good job of it, but now I'm thinking that I would rather have a new tank with the same foot print - but much taller. Unfortunately I'm not back to Chch till Jan 21, then off again 1st of Feb. So a bit of a problem with the glass ordering.
alanmin4304
It is pretty difficult to cut small bits off to trim glass particularly if it is thick glass, usually ends up worse because you have to crumble it off with pliers and you get a ragged edge. alanmin4304
30 yaers ago I used to make half the tanks in Christchurch but I only make my own now. I don't mind showing people how. It is realy not that hard, its only a matter of getting the confidence through practice. I will be making a 1200x450x400 and another the same size but in 6 compartments after xmas and you are welcome to give me a hand if you want to organise something (and see how it is done). And shiuh is keen on making one as well.
Pinkygirl
Hey sounds good, would be keen to watch you make it after xmas. Let me know when you do. So where abouts do you source your glass from?
shiuh
yes...i will be keen to come and help out. and might as well learn to do it myself in the future. i have just ordered glass from a local glazier 900 x 300 x 360 with compartments and 4 holes drilled for $50. alanmin4304
6mm I assume, sounds like a good price.
shiuh
yes. its 6mm. now the hard bit is assembling them. well, i will be learning how to make them from a tank Guru after christmas, wont i.
alanmin4304
I will post on here when ready to go. A 1200mm tank is a lot easier to make with 2 people so you will not be unemployed.
Pinkygirl
cool good to see that we can get to gether and help each other out. Sounds like i will need to get some glass. Since i am new to this tank building thing will need some advice i'm looking at 1200mm long so will i get glass that is 10mm thisck? Also what sort of glass do i get from the glazier? any advice would be great.
alanmin4304
I would use 10mm on a tank 1200 x 460mm high. I have a contact to get it at a good price but you would need to order it soon because they will cut it over the xmas break. PM me and come around and see the choices before you order the glass. Also that size will be a lot easier to make with 2 people (awkward on your own) Shiuh will get away with 6 mm because he has partitions to give added support. Warren
Go here to correctly calculate your glass thickness: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/articles/techni ... thickness/ After reading this and using the calculator there is no guesswork... On the last page there is a MS Excel download. It's easy to use to calculate the thicjness required.
