I use plumbing big enough to put your arm down, so would have to be a MEGA SNAIL!

neither pies or I were commenting on your AVERAGE plumbing, simply stating WE would need to have a HUGE snail to plug up our durso's. i thought you'd be used to the smart arse comments on this site by now anyway steve?

no listen to steve, he is absolutly right.a nice water spill happened to me a few months ago. the cartridge is very good just make sure that you got the small bottom cover disk on as well. i didn't and a snail managed to get over my overflow (not hard at all), crawled into that little opening on the cartridge and got stuck in my restricter in my durso. with the snail being stuck, the gravity suction when the durso reaches maximum level (above the air hole) didn't work (it should have sounded like a toilet flushing over and over), instead it overflowed on to the floor (only 80liters or so). now i make sure that my filter cartridge is in place to avoid further spills.

I think you guys will kill me for this, but to me, that is the weakness in a durso. The fact that there is a restriction in it.

I too have had an overflow caused by snail in pipe, my wife has still not forgiven me, and I now work on the principle if something might happen, it will, I have to design around it.

If I did have a durso, I'd go for a restriction on the beginning end, which would have to be a lot smaller than the restriction down the pipe. Such as Steves cartridge.

Well as I designed a while back but have yet to implement, I will have a redundant pipe setup incase of any 'emergencies'. Essentially a 2nd hole in the tank just above the maximum water level of the durso that is t'd up to the rest of the overflow system as shown here:

durso_mod.gif

This should mean still a quiet overflow but lessens the risk of spillage incase the durso gets clogged. We've got new carpet is going in the whole house early next year (once rennovations are complete) Murphy's law would mean my time for a flood would be a few days after the carpet goes in :D What can happen will happen so Im not taking any chances :D

Good one Chimera. A redundant pipe will certainly reduce chances to almost negligeable.

You'd need some mechanism, such as gurgling noise, or whatever, to alert you if the redundant one actually came into use, so you'd know to go and fix the problem.

Wouldnt a completly seperate emergency pipe be of more use? I dont know much about air/fluid physics but wont air gett sucked in and mix in the redunancy pipe "T" fitting? (dunno if this would be loud or not a problem?)

Arrgh I still gota make my durso when I get back - and then I have to make it totally octoproof.

Now there's a challenge!

Believe me I know! , I have pondered much on this, its a dilli of a pickle. :D

The annoying thing is they are inquisitive and strong - so its gotta be good.

Someone suggested overflow combs to the roof, but now its likely that I will be having a couple of the midget species - and they are very small, = small beaks = probably able to get through a 5c coin size hole. Ill have to use mesh I think. I even have to worry about the return as they can crawl against a very strong current.

And apparantly the midgets have a tendency to bite, and if you wear a glove they go for the other hand. Worse than a bee sting!:o
