casey05
i had a neon die of the same problem a couple of months ago.does anyone know what it is?
nickyboi
Take one saucepan 50 ml of canola oil and heat for 5 mins Take fish and fry for 30 seconds on each side, garnish with a rind of lemon and a little parsley, the fish should now be ready for consumption. jokes Sorry to hear about that mate, I had the exact same thing happen to one of my fish and was told it was an infection, but cannot remember the name of the problem nor the product I was told to purchase. I didnt buy it though as the muppet in the LFS was too vague. It actually corrected itself and after 3 days had gone. The fish is very healthy now. May want to leave it a few days before stressing, however the experts in here may know more, and maybe it needs urgent attention. Good luck matey
casey05
thanks nickyboi, you had me going for a few minutes there! i hope it does cos its sad loosing fishies
mrshanepaul
It is probably cotton mouth/wool, a bacterial infection. But I am no expert. You could leave it up to fate and the constitution of the fish. If you care a lot about whether the fish dies, you probably want to treat it. Some info: http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/disea ... mnaris.htm To try and stop this happening again, you may want to look at the causes such as stress and water quality. Alan
Off to an isolation tank ASP and then do your treatment. Maybe a salt addition, or a methylene bath. But isolate straight away. Alan

Jammos
another thing you could do is add melafix as this helps. melafix and salt is what i used when an angels got it. also sounds like you might want to do some sucking of stuff off the bottom of your tank as this will help. It is mainly brought on by bad water quality.
casey05
yeah i know and i feel soooooo bad.did you read the above threads about the tank scenario.do you think i should move the other fish.i might have to flush the infected fish as he's upside down and well almost dead i'll wait til he dies tho.
Jammos
i'm sorry to say but i would get rid of him now(just in case) then give the tank a good clean tommorrow and see how the others go.
Alan
Chuck the fish onto the concrete path hard to kill it. Or just into a small(margarine) container till it dies. Get it out. Do some house (tank) cleaning and do a water change with the other fish. If you do a straight swap to a clean tank, if they are stressed, you will only stress them more, and prolly have more casualties. casey05
yeah thanks alan.i ended up flushing it down the loo it was practicly dead and suffering which was causing the other fish stress so yeah the best way i could think of killing it was to flush it:( i feel bad but may have saved the others from being infected.i put them straight into my new tank last night as i couldnt stand them being in the other tank any longer.smaller tanks are so much harder to keep up then bigger ones.they all survived the night and are looking healthy and happy.my zebra danios are swimming through the bubbles from the bubble wall and the tetras are swimming around.they are all much happier now.im testing the water today so i should have alright results if the fish seem okay hopefully.and i couldnt do a water change for the other tank cos i didnt have any water so i had to put them in the other tank.desperate times call for desperate measures.oh and what do you think of cockatoo dwarf cichlids.i was thinking of getting one or two if i can find out their compatibility and price and somewhere nearby to get one. casey05
the fish also seemed to be quite relieved and excited to be in the new tank.in the old one the didnt move much but now they are swimming around quite happily in their little groups.i think thats a good sign. LYNDYLOO
Hi Casey05, Sorry to hear about your Neon dying , from what I've been told Neons aren't a terribly hardy fish, thought I might get a shoal of 15 or so as they do look neat when there is a mass of them. Good Luck with the rest of your fishies. Lynda
casey05
thanks lynda.its nice to know that.i see that you live in levin.do you get your fish stuff from levin petworld?
mrshanepaul
Sorry to hear that. Still, losing only one fish is something to be happy about. It could have been the whole lot...
casey05
Yeah i am very grateful it was just the one although a few months ago it happened to just one neon but he was a weak looking fish since the beginning but this last one i dont know about.im just glad the others are happy and healthy.i just did a water test and everything was good except the pH which is at 7.6 but i dont know if thats anything to worry about.i'll retest this weekend.its a new tank n all so i dont know what to expect.i also tested the water from my old tank which has no fish or heater now and it was a bad ammonia level of 1.0.no wonder my fish didnt like it.
antwan
Hi casey05 I too am sorry to hear about your neon...however look how happy your other fish are now. I am also interested in cockatoo cichlids they are a reasonably peaceful fish until they start breeding. this is when they get aggressive. Books and websites say to have 2-3 females to each male each with their own cave (upside down flower pot works wonders). I find they are truely awesome fish. At our LFS double reds were $40 each and normal ones were $20 each. Im not sure if this is expensive compared to others or not. Hope i have helped and good luck in your future of fishkeeping. HummingBird
Agasizzi aren't always peaceful. I had two males in a 4ft tank and they harrassed everything - a breeding pair of full size Angels, my clown loaches (killed one of them), siamese fighters and my school of 21 cardinal tetras. casey05
oh okay then :-? they are beautiful fish but i dont want to take any chances in getting fish that may be aggressive.thanks everyone for your messages of kindness.I fed my fish some frozen bloodworms as i havent for a few weeks now.the tetras and danios seem to love them especially.can anyone give me some ideas as to what kind of fish to get then as i want more and have plenty of room left in my tank but i want something different from tetras and danios and rasboras (which i wanna get rid of.does anyone want 2 swift rasboras in good nic and can pick up?)i want to get rid of them as i want some guppies but my rasboras might nibble their lovely tails
casey05
got some new fish for my tank and well i think they might be stressed as their mouths are always opening and shutting not fast though.pH is 7.2,ammonia at 0,nitrite at 0.25(any suggestions on how to get that down?)and nitrate at 0.10.is these results the answer as to my fish problem. They look happy enough just that mouth movements constant. LYNDYLOO
Hi Casey, Yes, I do buy my fishies from Grant at Levin Petworld, I also buy them from WetPets in Palmy, Did u manage to find a home for those 2 fishies u were wanting to get rid of? I find that as soon as there is a fishies that is looking a bit worse for wear, weither it be sick or what ever, the other fishies will pick st it untill it is dead then they will eat it, if I see this happening I will remove the poor fishie that is being picked at and put it out of it's misery. How's everything going with your tank now, no more dead fishies? Lynda
