lduncan
There has been a huge increase in Asian people i think it's near 20% now, but not really a big Pacific Island or Maori population, not like in the North Island anyway. The strip on Friday and Saturday nights still reminds you there is a high proportion of "trash" down here though. Very different to other cities in NZ and even Australia. Feelers
Layton your probably right - I just know Canterbury is, so just assumed Chch. While I've been there theres been heaps of violence, rapes, murders, a serial armed robber who has done 9 shops and is still on the loose. HQ of the National Front (natzi idiots), boy racers and street gangs that were both on 60 mins within the last 3 months. Hahaa, I was gonna mention the "trash" thing - on the money. White pants, black G strings and bleached blonde hair with cowboy hats.
wasp
Yes, struck me as odd at the time also. I guess as a young person flatting I was thrown right in the middle of it. Perhaps the dress code has changed over the years, but I was surrounded by what would be called "white trash". Even had bike gang type people coming around the house can't remember what they were called, maybe it was Epitaph Riders. Do they still exist? Some of my flatmates were North Islanders also, that kept me balanced.

Pies
Ashburton is the susicide capital of NZ. I was born and grew up in Christchurch. Lived in Richmond & Shirley. Rough as. My fathers 2 younger brothers are ex Devils Henchmen. My cousin is married to the leader of the National Front and has had 2 of his children. I remember Christchurch as a rough white city. But a different type of rough than say Stokes Vally here in Wellington or South Auckland. I get to Christchurch a few times a year. Would never consider returning. wasp
Well isn't this thread a great advertisement for Christchurch? Could this explain some of the little personality quirks of our most famous Christchurch member?
JoeBlog
Christchurch is a very violent place. Apparantly the high sucide rate (highest for any city in the world) is due to the positivly charged nor-westers and their depressent affect - no really! Violent crimes everywhere. It's quite an odd place really. Granted, this may be true per capita, but a far cry from the frequency and extent of violence in the States. I'm from the Los Angeles area and this is nothing. I've had guns in my face more than once from gangbangers growing up and personally seen a few people blown away at high school parties. The main reason that I'm staying in NZ is to raise my daughter in a "safe" environment.

wasp
Actually the scariest time I've had in my life was in Gisborne, went there after kaitaia I was still quite young, single, and flatting. Ended up sharing house with among others mongrel mob members. That WAS tough, made the white gangs in Christchurch look like a kindergarten picnic. Ended up leaving town to get away from it all, that's why I'm in Aucklands North Shore now, the most crime FREE place in NZ
