Sharkey
Has anyone in NZ done this? Think of the money you could save. Would it work? I see a few on other sites and have been thinking about this not as the only source of light but as the main one. With maybe some VHO fluros? Should pay for itself? Just getting the wife to let me put a hole in the roof could be a problem and from what I can see you need to get the dome with no uv filter? dogmatix
That looks pretty sweet, could be great as supplemental lighting
Feelers
I thought algae was supposed to go nuts with natural lighting - maybe the light could be filtered a little or something to tone it down a bit?
reef
thought algae was supposed to go nuts with natural lighting - Only if you have bad water quality. good lighting brings out bad water quality
wasp
To get algae you need light PLUS nutrients. Sharkey, that is truely awesome. And at $700.00 each well it's possible to spend that on ordinary halide lighting, then you have to pay for the power, and new bulbs all the time. So I'm rating that 10/10 for the guy actually doing it. I'm looking at doing it myself for next tank, I think the ultimate would be to have some kind of light detector that would turn on supplemental lighting only when the natural lighting is not enough.
