misnoma
Okay, just got home with four 20L buckets of nice crystal clear saltwater. So... do I need to let it sit for a while/day/arbitary period of time - or can I use it pretty much straight away?
Brianemone
if its about 10-20% just pull out the water from the tank and chuck in the new water, if its a larger percentage then you might want to heat it up a bit. you can use it straight away though

cracker
I like to leave for 4 weeks before throwing it in.....kills bacteria and any possible nasties including parasitic cysts that may be present....but thats just me! At the end of the day, all you want is the salt content.
Rocketman
I'm currently using Instant Ocean is it possible to use seawater for top up's etc.. or should I stick with what's working for me .
Ira
Uhh, I assume you mean using seawater for water changes since every idiot knows you only top off with fresh water.

misnoma
Tis funny when people see me adding top-off and ask why in hell I'm putting freshwater in a saltwater tank
chimera
Uhh, I assume you mean using seawater for water changes since every idiot knows you only top off with fresh water as steve says, not everyone knows. comments like that will stop people asking questions on this site ira. it maybe obvious to those who know or have been on here long enough but to someone starting out it may not be so obvious. it didnt occur to me when i first started, even took me a couple of months to find out too! :-? jetskisteve
yup , thats the kinda things i was talking about. If you dont ask you dont learn.
Jimmy
Why do you get hair alge from topping up from tap water?
Feelers
I think this is because water quality varies- the maximum allowable health limits are very lax compared to what reefers need. Phospherous I think is quite high in lots of tap water.
wasp
Jimmy think about this. You add top up water, it evaporates but leaves behind whatever impurities it contains. You add more top up. Doesn't take long for algae causing nasties to reach high levels in your tank. Only the best purest water should be used for top up cos stuff will end up much more concentrated in the tank than what it was in the top up water. Water straight out of the tap, where I live anyway, has a TDS (total dissolved solids) of around 60 ppm. Even though we think it is pretty clean.
