cracker
just wondering who uses these and in which part of your system. if you use it correctly you should be able to eliminate RODI top off, if pre filtered thru a 1 micron filter. what other ways are being used? reef
if you use it correctly you should be able to eliminate RODI top off, if pre filtered thru a 1 micron filter. I doubt it, UV kills bactaria etc, It does not remove organics,
Pies
1 Micron will remove most sediments and DOC from the water, it will not however remove metails and some bacterria. It will not remove colouring agents from the water either. The UV should kill the bacterria but the metals and other elements in the water will remain. Ozone will remove the colouring agents, but again doesn't tackle the minerals in the water. Also if you are UV after the 1 micron, any thing you killed will remain in the water colum until it settles somewhere and rots or is skimmed out. lduncan
UV isn't a replacement for rodi, it doesn't attack inorganic ions like nitrate phosphate and metals. UV is used to break carbon double bonds ( c=c ) in large organic molecules, this can make them easier to skim. It also kills bacteria. cracker
Im on tank rain supply. i dont think i will have an issue with minerals/metals. im thinking carbon, then 1 micron, then UV for top off. Mmmmmm.....lots of options but what is really needed for tank supply.
cracker
pie, do you get dinos on your sand bed at all? i presume you use rodi?
Pies
Do you mean Diatoms? No, or at least not that I can see. The sand bed remains white, people often comment on it, asking what the secret is, there is no secret, i just leave it be. Yes I use RO/DI. JoeBlog
I use a 40 watt UV sterilizer just prior to the skimmer. After installing it, the output of the skimmer greatly increased. I plan on getting another 40 watt system to work sequentially with the one I have.
chimera
Im on tank rain supply. i dont think i will have an issue with minerals/metals yet another myth.
Sharkey
yeah im on rain water. No way I would put that in my tank. (Its only fit for human use) I use distilled only for the top up and NSW for water changes.
jetskisteve
You should run your rain water thru DI

cracker
distilled is a "no no" in aquariums sharkey....you may want to do some reading online. im gonna give it a coupla months and see how my system settles in. Then make a decision on top off.
Brianemone
again someone saying distilled water is bad???? i thought we covered this, distilled water is the best possible water you could use. the whole point of ro/di is to get as close as possible to pure h2O (distilled water is about as close as you can get)
cracker
have a search on reefcentral, advanced aquarist and the likes....see what they say. i havent searched for awhile but remember seeing it as no good. cant remeber the reason now, but could soon find out. distillation is cheaper than RODI, otherwise everybody would be using distilled. are you using it Brian? and if so are you finding issues at all? Brianemone
the only reason i can think of is copper. but if the distiller doesnt use copper then its only water coming out
Brianemone
no i use straight tap water. i thought ro would be cheaper
jetskisteve
Distilled SUCKS power so probably more expensive also the coils are usually aluminium.
Ira
The only problem with distilled water(Other than it uses a stupid amount of electricity so is more expensive than RO) is if the condenser uses copper coils. Otherwise it's all good.
Sharkey
My waters free.I get it from work. They use a glass water distiller in the testing lab so i get 20 Liters at a time, and your right it would use alot of power and it has a lot of waste water also so not so good if your on tank water supply and every drop counts in the summer. So no problems for me theres got to be some perks with your job right?
reef
Jetski also the coils are usually aluminium. aluminium coil is not be a problem with freshwater as only salt water reacts.

I'd hate to see the day when you find out what zeolites are comprised of then. There's more aluminium in there than you can shake a stick at.
