Why not?

I didn't particularily want to go nuts on the stand for the tank to fit one in underneath (would have required some fun DIY remodeling), I also felt I had sufficient water volume (nearly 400L) to maintain stable parameters without too much trouble, and I don't mind the equipment in the tank too much.

If I owned my own house, and wasn't renting, it would be a different story and I probably would be quite the diy plumber (or not :D) right now.

Purely trying to keep it simple at the mo, get the hang of what I'm doing etc.

Only downside I've found of late is that I'm getting a build up of organics on the surface of the water because I have no overflow, so trying to work out some cunning way to get around that.

Livestockwise.. I have a heap of mushrooms, and a finger leather frag, all seem to be doing really well (well.. I can't really tell, but they're opening every day and waving in the current etc).

Parameters have been nice and stable this week (well up till last time I tested which was tues), will be testing again this weekend and possibly considering being naughty and adding something that swims.

Hey anthony I'm looking for cheap ways to make my tank, and for me live rock is outa the question, (cost and I want a cold water tank) however you might wanna have a look at creating your own rocks. I'm seriously considering it, basicially from what I gather, it is equivilant to base rock, and will over time become covered with life, and you can make what ever shapes you want.

You could buy what you can afford of live rock, and fill the gap with stuff you make yourself, the live rock will help seed the made ones.

The process is as easy as making concrete, and there are lots of recipies, depending on the look you are going for.

As I'm on an incredibly low budget, this is the option for me :D , plus I love DIY,

what will be the first thing that swims?

Green chromis, gf really wants one, and cheap :) I also really like their colours, so it's a fish I want to keep, not just a "get it out of the tank when I'm sure I won't kill other things" fish :)

Not to mention unless you have a trap they're near impossible to catch :D

Try pointing having one of your powerheads disturbing the surface, that should help. Hmmm, might be able to twist the skimmer intake too so it's drawing from closer to the surface.

They do help with that, however they just seem to heard the organic type stuff into the low flow areas on the surface (corners right behind the powerhead, who would have thought).

Need to devise something that's an overflow type arrangement, but doesn't dump to the sump, just circulates it back into the water column so the skimmer can have it's way with it.
