debs01
As some of you know hubby and I are about to build a new tank and we were going to use acrylic to make the tank, however while just browsing Trademe just now came across the comment that acrylic was only safe for goldfish?? ANd not to be used for tropicals. Just need someone to clarify that for me :-? :-?
Caryl
Then why are so many aquariums made of acrylic these days? That's a new one on me. Perhaps you should ask them why they say it isn't safe. Perhaps they are getting confused with some silicones? :-?
toughchicken
All LFS have acrylic aquariums, for tropical fish. It would be like half of there sales I would have thought.

Brianemone
back in the day when i was looking for a nice nano tank i was considering getting an acrylic tank from a LFS, they told me they wouldnt reccomend it because of the heater possibly warping the acrylic (low grade thin acrylic), anyway that my be why he's saying that
Jo1
Hi debs, We operate an aquarium rental business and over half the tanks have tropical fish and a heater. The acrylic is 6mm thick and the heaters have never caused any problems. The wider each face of the tank is the thicker the acrylic will have to be and that could be costly! debs01
Thank you jo, just what I needed to know, perhaps you can help me my tank is going to be 70lX45hX35d maybe you might know what width I might need???
Jo1
Wish I could help but I have no idea. We manufacture hexagonals and I think each face is only about 40cm across (from memory). You could try getting in touch with a business that manufactures acrylic products but I really think you will have to go for at least 10-12mm. Apparently the price has gone up with the oil prices by about 30%.
