Brianemone
Hey Can some of you guys post some pics of how much skimmate you get from your skimmers (deltec, berlin, aquamedic, diy) just stumbled along this pic on the zeovit forum of what a BK pulled out in 2 days, i understand they are the top of the line but id like to see if anything comes close
lduncan
1.5 - 2 litres a day from ap902
Brianemone
is that wet skimmate or similar to this? (sounds like the deltec compares well)
Pies
1.5-2L per week, Deltec AP902. Its a thick-ish consistancy, required the neck of the skimmer to be scrubed clean as has a 2-3mm film of fatty/waxy brown grossness. lduncan
Tea coloured. Also get a green, toothpaste consistency, build up around 4-5mm thick at the top of the riser tube, every week.
reef
the guys got problems if the skimmer pulls out that much. the bk skimmit is not that thick so its wet skimming.
Brianemone
how do your bio loads compare, (considering you have the same skimmer)
lduncan
I've got rock shedding waste. Pies has a sand bed and rock storing waste. It's hard to compare.
Brianemone
live stock as in fish.
Pies
I have 2500 litres of water, 2100 litres of that is lit, the other 400 in the sump/plumbing plunged into darkness. My fish load is low. Pie
lduncan
5 tangs, 3 royal dottybacks, maybe ten or so other fish.
wasp
I've got rock shedding waste. Pies has a sand bed and rock storing waste. It's hard to compare. Here we go again. I'll say one thing for you Layton, you are nothing if not persistant. :-?
Pies
4 large tangs, 4 clownfish, 1 large wrassee, 1 hawkfish, 2 mandarins, 1 blenny. I think thats it. Pie
lduncan
 Umm... that's the truth, clearly it's going to make a difference to how much a skimmer pulls out. wasp, stop trying to turn it into something it's not.
Pies
Layton has special rock that sheds waste, where as my rock is the absorb bad waste rock. I also have the scarey sand bed which is storing lots of badness for another day, hence the reason my skimmer isn't pulling out 2L of skimate a day, its all going into the sandbed. Brianemone
so layton seems to have a higher fish load, but the skimmate is similar. do you think your skimmers would pull out more if your tanks where stocked heavier??? Pies
I guess they would. As I understand it skimate production is related to the amount of DOC and organics in the water, which will increase as the bio-load increases. Feeding, NSW vs. ASW, refugium size, lighting, water change frequency would all have a baring on the result though I would think. I see no relation to what I feed compared to skimate production, but i've not looked at it with too much detail. Pie
lduncan
Your rock is shedding too Pies, but the waste just falls back into the sand bed. And the rock is sitting in the sand bed, so it absorbs it back again. A bit like a paper towel absorbs water when one end is stuck in a glass of water. Pies
What about the rock sitting on top of other rock? Or the rock sitting on the plastic reef racks? Pie
lduncan
If the pore water of the rock has access to nutrients then it will absorb to an equilibrium (absorbtion), at the same time it reaches an equilibrium with the water nutrient levels (generally shedding). wasp
To truly compare, the skimmate would have to be dried. otherwise it's hard to tell if greater production, is simply water. To me that BK skimmate looks fairly wet skimmate.
Brianemone
anyone else want to pipe in?? there more than one skimmer around
jetskisteve
mine has similar to pic , i can vouch for Pies its thick nasty stinky stuff!!!
reef
I own a BK and it does the same thing as the photo, it skims more, but it is not as thick. My Deltec AP1003 pulls out about 1 Litre a day, have over 30-40 fish. Whilst it does not pull out as much as the BK it is a much thicker waste, so i would quess that it is taking out more. My wife said last night my rocks are clean
