Ira
I think if I was doing something like that I'd have tried to make it a shed sized sump room.
Fay
Cracker can always do that later it canbe costly to build a shed at this stage, but good idea for later on.
cracker
I'm not wanting a shed....it woudnt fit with the house where it is located. at least a box can be planted and scaped around. There is more room in the box then just the sump. i have about one metre to the side where I can work from. Heaps of room.
cracker
The start of the main display cabinet....TV and Stereo underneath black granite. So far this bit will take 4 men to move!! 200x75 and 100x75 Macrocarpa
slappers
that is going to be one very heavy and solid cabinet
Brianemone
im assuming your doing that for the design benefits rather than for the structural benefits, cause other wise thats massive over kill still interested to see what your doing with the granite
cracker
Its actualy not overkill...i've got to spread 1.6 tonnes over the floor area, so after speaking to my granite man, this is the minimum. Tank=220 kg water=1000kg Cabinet=200kg granite 200kg total 1660 kg
Pies
Any rock or sand going in the tank? Cause its a little heaver the water + lights, hood, pumps etc etc 1.6 tons, pffft.
cracker
exactly...the bloody thing needs to be overkill!!!

Brianemone
why did you choose the granite to go under the tank? is there going to be part where the tank is not sitting on it or is the tank going to cover the granite completely?
cracker
I chose granite for its "Dead flatness" and yes the edges and a little part of the tops will be visable. Most of the Granite will NOT be seen.....but hey, thems the breaks!
chimera
i certainly hope you're still going to place a thin layer of poly under the tank still!!! if not, thats asking for BIG trouble.
Anthony
nice idea what is with the jaged edges on one side? HA raining in aucks yesterday
cracker
Yip, just bought the poly this morning. probably wouldnt be an issue without poly, as the base is 12mm, but going to use poly anyway. The jagged edges are at the back up against the wall. They are part of an off cut that was the perfect size. The jagged bits wont be seen at all. (I have a friend in the granite business) He gives me good prices. This particular granite is actually $450.00 per square meter without polishing costs. But because it was an offcut i got it for about half!
dogmatix
Looking great cant wait to see it finished hope your saving for the rock
Brianemone
im using a resin board (like what they use for lab bench's) fairly solid stuff, just seems like a large expense for something that wont be seen (i love granite my self but cant uderstand not being able to see it. chimera
heheheee, ya can't beat 3 sheets of 12mm ply and 1 sheet of 10mm poly i've had sledgehammers demolishing walls in the lounge and kitchen and not so much as a shimmer on the surface of the water
cracker
Im spanning 900mm for the Tv, so needed something that wouldnt bow over the span. Brian....You will see the Lh and Rh side and the front edes and a bit of the top face at the front and sides, not much.......but will still look real nice. The timber was free, as I borrowed it off one of my small businesses!! So the whole cabinet finshed will be around $750.00!! No complaints here!! Ben....Got the rock dude, already cycled too! (Cheers anyway)
chimera
when you going for your next water change dude? im just brewing up 200 litres for a change tomorrow night. i've run RODI for about 16 hours and just hit around 200 litres now I have to buy an (expensive) bag of salt mix. aye carumba, probably the biggest reason i dislike ASW. quicker to nip down to the beach... if mother nature can just give me a few days of nice weather before and over the weekend!!!
