FindingNemo
Ok i recently purchased a 360 litre second hand tank as my original one sprung a leak. With the new tank i inherited 4 Pacu of which 2 are already quite large. However i'm a little worried about the size these buggers can grow to and I wonder if i should try to rehome them or is the tank big enough? Ira
You'll likely have an easier time talking the fish into filleting and frying themselves up for you than rehoming them...
FindingNemo
I have a cat!
Caryl
Very difficult to rehome as they get so big only places like the Napier Aquarium and Kelly Tarltons have tanks big enough. A guy in Dunedin recently tried to get his rehomed as it had outgrown its 8ft x 2ft tank. It could barely turn around in it and was still growing. They grow up to 3ft and are very deep bodied. One site says that even a 500 gallon (Imperial) tank is too small for an adult pacu. That is around 2273Lt I think so your 360Lt may be a tad small

FindingNemo
Actually if that is the fish (Myleus schomburgkii) then its pretty much full grown now at 5 inch's and maybe i dont have a problem
Alan
Tell ya what FN, put up that it has died and withdraw it from the auction. I would. IMHO in NZ that IS a rare find. Alan

FindingNemo
Yep thats exactly it and from what i've seen its about fully grown at 5 inches so i no longer need to rehome it. The reason i didnt want to keep it in the first place was i thought they grew freaking huge.
Alan
Yep, the others, you should get in touch with the local fish and chippy to see if they'd take them. Those fish should never be allowed into NZ for the aquarium trade. Alan
FindingNemo
Im starting to think the other 2 are Silver Dollars.
Ira
Yeah, I was actually going to say that before, none of those look like pacus. The other two in your auction in the background, very bad picture, but they look like silver dollars to me too.
FindingNemo
I finally got one to sit still long enough for a bad picture. The thing is there more of a dull golden colour than silver.
FindingNemo
So does anyone no if thats a Silver Dollar?

FindingNemo
I was only going on what the chap that sold me the tank said they were. However in trying to find out about them i have read that Pacu, Silver Dollars, and Pirana are all related.
