chimera
round 1.... i added a regal angel just over a week ago (originally to my fuge) then moved him into the main display tank a few days ago. he seems very happy, is eating, swimming and behaving normal. however, my blue tang (just over twice his size) has taken exception to having the angel in his space. the angel spends most of the time under the reef rack coming out every hour or so for a look around and a feed but as soon as he does, the tang chases him back to his 'hole'. i would expect this to be normal behaviour due to fish being somewhat territorial. are they eventually likely to get along? SteveA
Yes they will eventually get on if one doesn't die first. The afformention use of a mirror is the only way I have come across to stop the chasing. I have even had the former chasee come out to do battle with its own reflection and be totally ignored by what were, only minutes before, the chasers, but who were now too busy fighting off more 'threatening' foes. I would expect to need to keep it in front of the tank for up to a week but you take it away to check progress after a day or so. SteveA
How did it work out in the end? Reason I ask is I already have a very large but pretty placid blue tang and a smallish, but feisty, purple tang and will shortly be adding a regal angel. RnB
some fish just not get on, my yellow tang just had to go as was becoming a bully to who ever the next biggest fish was! Purple tangs are too expensive to loose to yellow tangs... yellow seemed happy living in another tank now..... purple tang happy and recovering nicely. i reckon you have to just mix n match... SteveA
My blue tang was given to me and has had so many tank moves in its life (6 year+ apparently) that moving tanks doesn't seem to bother it and neither does any other fish. It is by a factor of 3-4 the biggest fish in the tank but his/her nature is so placid that I have never seen it do anything to chase/intimidate/bully any other fish. The purple tang, on the other hand, has hardly grown since I got it (but may do so now it lives in a home feeding regime rather than an office feeding regime), however it is frequently to be found scrapping with just about every other fish in the tank with the possible exception of the mandarin and the bicolour gobi. Luckily, most of its fights only get to the posturing stage and neither it, nor its adversaries (usually damsels), seem to get injured. RnB
my purple was very thin, badly coloured and had ripped fins.... the yellow just would not let it graze/eat properly,, very violent physical attacks, i finally caught it after such an attack lying on its side.... it has over the past 10 days recovered very quickly, fins healed well, more colour etc, but it is still very thin, and i have to wonder if it will make it trough... it is now freely grazing tho and I am happy i have given it the best chance it has by removing the yello... i imagine if i put in a small yellow the purple could beat it up! still i have a lemon peel that provides the moving yellow in the tank and it seems willing to defend itself but very friendly. Also found a missing tomatoe clown living for past 3 weeks in the sump, prob under the skimmer, funny watching it re-establish its relationshiop wuith the male, and re establishing pecking order in tank, i was 100% sure it had jumped over the back of the tank and was lost forever... been a good fish day! bad fish day was the chromis that went through my iwaki, demolishing an impeller and almost ripping the fish in half... it was promptly dispatched to a better after life I keep having to remind myself how artificial an aquarium environment is to the fishes natural habitat, but also how many fish fall prey on the reefs to others and preditors! or even collectors

If it has recovered quickly then it is still basically a healthy fish. Repairing damage requires some amount of energy. Try feeding some mosquito larvae if you can, mine can't get enough of them and they provide heaps of nourishment in a small package. chimera
round 2. tang has regal angel in the corner,... regal is recovering nicely,... tang is 4 times his size and damn fast,... he's bullying him again. but wait, the boxing gloves are off, they're eating nori together,... aw aint that cute. regal is still a shy fish, but certainly coming out to graze alot more now. tang still doesnt like him much and gives him a chase every now and then but angel is holding his own. i think the tang realises the angel is not really interested in anything but sharing a bit of his food so he's slowly getting better with it. funny as the angel is the only fish that stops and looks straight at me when i get close to the tank. he looks me right in the eye everytime. if i move suddenly, he buggers off real quick (im still bigger than him, heheheeee.... 8) )
SteveA
Sounds promising. The Regal I am getting will be the 2nd biggest fish in the tank (about 12cm and apparently a very hearty eater of virtually everything it is given) , the only one bigger being the peaceful, so far, blue tang. It will be about twice the size of the purple tang but I suspect this will not cause the purple tang to be at all reticent at showing its feelings on the matter of a new arrival. I tried a small one once before and it got the crap kicked out of it, hid, stopped eating, then vanished. This will be my 2nd, and last, attempt. I have two mirrors at the ready. SteveA
Well, things went pretty much as predicted except that a large Javanese damsel proved to be the 2nd largest fish by half a fin. This, plus the Purple Tang as predicted, gave the Regal a bit of a hard time, or at least attempted to, but were fended off and no damage was done. The only injuries occurred to a smaller damsel who decided that the arrival of a bunch of new fish was a good reason to pick a fight, most of which he lost, with every other fish in the tank. The Regal was nibbling at rocks after 1 hour and after about 4 hours weathering his welcome retired to the back of the tank and has been there for the last two days where it has been observed on several occasions apparently happily pecking its way along under the reef. So, apart from not coming out the front for two days it is looking to have settled in reasonably well. The Yellow Tang that went in at the same time looks far more harassed, and is by the purple, which now seems to ignore the Regal. skuzza
I have had many angels over the past 12 years and 99% of the time they will grow very fast when another fish is trying to be dominant. As soon as they get to a certain size they start to take over and can become quite pushy.I have tryed two types of large angel fish in the last 2 years in my reef tank. The first was a juv emperor angel which was fine for about 6 months.I knew better but i thought maybe this time he/she wont be like previous times. He /she took control and its second in comand and turned just as nasty was off all my fish, the purple tang. They were neat to watch, the purple tang would be like a mirror image and even eat at the same time. They gave each other back up so they thought they were invinsable. At feeding time the angel would eat out of my hand so the purple tang started to do the same. They would not let me put any more fish in my tank.It was tag team attack. This was ok as the two of them were amazing to watch and fearless. But then my angel decided to start eating my coral for no reason at all.I took the angle out and the purple tang turned it to a shy loner with a nasty streak. The second was a regal because they are not so aggressive and can be ok in a reef tank.(they say).Anyway it just ate my coral from the moment i put it in so i have given up finaly with my lesson well learnt.Good luck to you chim i hope it turns out good as they are a amazing fish. SteveA
I am prepared for the possibility that the Regal may have to be removed to its own tank if it starts eating my SPS or my MPS (favites etc) corals. Currently I have no clams (as I had a big wrasse until my recent tank move) and only two LPS corals which I would move elsewhere before I moved the fish. So far the Regal has contented itself with pecking morcels off the underside of the reef, but I shall watch its behaviour. The regal will have to grow to about 3 times its current size before it even comes close to being the biggest fish in the tank. I have a very large blue tang which, while it does not bother any other fish, does not take any crap from anybody either. I suspect the Regal may well end up eating out of my hand as I currently have a flame hawk, several damsels, a clown fish, the blue tang and occasionally a royal gramma that do this. SteveA
After the origins of this thread and the initial reception my Regal got from the various tank incumbents, it has turned out to be my Blue Tang that has been the most persistent chaser of the Regal Angel. This didn’t start till after about a week and coincided with the Regal starting to venture out more. It only takes place outside of feeding time, as the tang is more interested in chasing food than in chasing the Regal (and the Regal knows this). The chasing only takes place out in front of the tank, as the tang does not seem interested in pursuing the Regal into the reef. Over the last week the chasing has lessened and the Regal has got bolder. It is a persistent and slightly cheeky fish and has gradually got the measure of the tang. The tang has two advantages, size and speed, but it also suffers from poor manoeuvrability and bad brakes such that the angel is starting to learn that when it chases you, instead of beating a hasty retreat back into the reef you can do a triple summersault with a double reverse backward twist which leaves you 15cm away and leaves the tang nose first into the substrate. At first I was a bit concerned, but no damage has been done to either party and it can be quite entertaining to watch, as clearly the Regal has no intention of letting the Blue Tang stop it exploring the tank. Oops, Ive been spotted, gotta go,...... back soon... Yes, I know my photography isn't much good. Steve

The regal is one amazing 'swimmer' to watch when he gets pace on. I've noticed that feeding Nori in particular, is when they both seem to be 'good mates'. The Tang is not bothered at all when the angel takes a peck at the clipping of Nori, in fact he prefers it as he grabs the bits the rip off, saves him doing it. SteveA
There will probably come a time when the Blue Tang will wish it had been nicer to the Regal when it was smaller. The angel has developed a keen interest in any food it sees the other fish eating, the only one that it so far doesn’t really like being the flake food (which I only got for it anyway), so I suspect that in a year or so the regal may be getting up to the size the tang is now.
