shiuh
I did a post once back in March, about how to yield more guppies frys. i wasnt satisfied with my big female guppies only having 20+ frys at that time. thus i have research on the info on how to yield more frys. factors that will influence the birth rates are water conditions, stress, diet, temperature, etc... i mainly experiment with DIET because i knew i havent try a variety of food on them. Heres some results i wanted to share. On 28/03/05 the female had 20+ fries (really dissapointed despite her size compared to others.) i was mainly feeding with livebearer flakes, micro pellet when i first started out. On 28/03/05 the female had 77 fries (excited!! it worked!) i have change the diet to livebearers flakes, micro pellet, freeze dried tubifex worms and freeze dried blood worms. On 26/05/05 the female had 118 fries (Satisfied at last! i have achieved my goal of hitting the numbers to the 100s) i have change the diet to freeze dried tubifex worms and freeze dried blood worms, Beef Heart n Liver Tucker, tropical Tucker and frozen blood worms i have noticed a significant Size gain and colour enchancement once started with with Beef Heart. the female is now huge and has shiny greenish scale body thus very healthy! i would recommend Beef Heart. if you want to put some SIZE on your guppies!! shiuh
Just to confirm the numbers are actually in the 100s.......see...i have counted them one by one....1,2,3,4,5...118!! um...not very impressed of writing this post at this time considering i have a presentation at 9.00am in the morning....Ah~ but whatever..i would do anything for the GUPPIES
PENEJANE
awesome pics there and very informative. I have gone from tropical flakes to the livebearer flakes with tubifex worms included in the one tub and I noticed that I use a lot less of this stuff than the tropical flakes as its already grounded up to good size. I have currently got 5 guppies in my tank and thought with that amount I would be having fry every two weeks but it seems like almost a month and only one has had fry. There is two males in there and I am not to sure at what point the fry are able to have babies themselves. All my guppies have that green shimmer to them (females mainly) which you said was healthy so I guess that if they were like that then there can't be much wrong with the water or environment. How can I increase my fry output?? I have two guppies that I really want some fry from. I don't quite have the $$$ to experment with food like you have. Still congratulations on ALL your babies
Brianemone
good results, silly livebearers imagine trying to change that many nappies :-?
PENEJANE
Don't remind me about nappies. I got them allllll over the place at the moment with my newborn pooping all the time lol Some times wished I was a fish. Then I can just leave the babies to fend for themselves hahaha
Wok
if you don't like pooey nappies then begin toilet training imediately. Good to hear about the guppies shuih... what did you use to get the black marker off your computer screen
Caryl
Very informative shiuh. Would you like to turn that information into a small article for me? Or may I use your information myself and create one?
livebearer_breeder
Thats very interesting, Ive found with almost every fish i have bred that they all respond best to copious amounts of White worms. however i have never tryed beef heart or liver tucker. I just had a look at my spawning traps, and see that, the female of yours is quiet average size, so well done on 118 fry! I think i will have to start fiddling around again and see if i can beat your record The problem is supplying the fry with enough food, to keep them growing at a fast pace! BBS is the best for this. I don't quite have the $$$ to experment with food like you have. i kept a record on the drops date and fry amounts for each of my females. most female guppies will drop every month or 28 days. however this might not be case, some might hold back if you stress it too much with putting her into the breeding traps. so with my recording, i know exactly when the female were about to drop. thus you wont stress the fish and you yield maximum frys amount. if you think you have nothing wrong with the water conditions, it might just be the diet.. livebearers flake is ok with some tubifex in it. but i found feeding freeze dried tubifex small pack for $2.95 or get the large one for $14.95 (this will last you for ages!) so it wont empty your pocket. beef heart goes for about $9.95 in store. but it will last for while and i think it is really worthed get it. you can experiment see if noticed the difference. keep a record and dont miss the drops and your guppies will have more frys output in no time!! BBS is the best for this. thanks Shae...i hope you can beat my record, dude.. . i heard peoples getting up to the 140s. personally i think fry amount is important because you then have more selective breeds when they grown up, but most important is that you want to breed good strain. dont have to ended up all 100s of unpure strains. BBS is good food the fry, but i personally think is too much a hassle with the aeration and harversting. feeding the fry with microworms is easy to culture and you will never run out with the food. im only concentrating on the guppies now mainly working on snakeskin/cobra. hopefully will be get some double swords soon and work on another strain from there. so..no room for your killies...sorry bro 8) 8)
livebearer_breeder
No worries man, lol, im into the guppys aswell so i can understand. I have 40+ of the doubel sword strain at the mo. I once had a gaint Guppy strain, that slowly feel apart, cause i knew nothing about Strain breeding. And i got 120-134 fry off her in a single drop, but the females were double the size of your female so i am still very impressed at the drop you got! Shelley
Very cool......just had 2 lots of guppy fry over the last fortnight...previously i have tried raising them in a searate tank but found I killed them with water changes and various other things....the first lot of the latest batch were a real fluke...I had had the mother in the breeder because she looked like she was about to pop and finally let her out....THEN she popped....only about 12 survived....I am not sure how many she had but she was a small fish herself. I never saw her eat any...but anyway, the important thing is....the babies have survived much more readily in the tank with mum and aunty and dad....and a flaming grwat kissing gourami!...They seem to have a sixth sense when a mouth is coming and dive for cover...however they are getting more bold now. The other female popped yesterday morning....approx 12 babies in the breeder....and i fished her out as although she still looked fattish she appeared to have stopped popping...and i was worried she would eat the lil babies.....anyway...she went on to pop out about another 10. I am chuffed to bits with my 20 odd babies a time.....so to hear your numbers over 100 is absolutely mind boggling! I am feeding liquifry to the new ones...and thawed brine shrimp to the bigger ones....dad and the gourami have gone to start cycling another tank to give mum and aunty and the babies a bit of a break....like someone else said earlier.....how old are the babies before they start playing mummies and daddies?
Caryl
I suspect guppies start playing mummies and daddies while still in the womb Baby guppies can eat finely crushed flake.
PENEJANE
I am not out to keep a huge batch of fry which is why I leave the female guppy in the main tank and hope that a small amount (up to a dozen) survive. I have just noticed lately and with your post got me thinking that I should be having more drops than what I am currently getting but I also remembered that most of my guppies seem to drop during the night so if they are then I will never know really. The main one that I am waiting for seems to be carrying albino fry as her spot is bright orange and you can see the individual fish (bellies I am guessing) are bright orange/red in colour as seperate little balls but there is no black to be seen with the eye colour. This fish has black eyes tho which is why I am very interested in keeping an eye on her and she has my curiousity caught on to as what colour the fry will turn out to be. I have a breeding net that I can attach to the side of the tank but I don't want to stress her out by putting her in there to soon. I will try and get a photo of her so you can see for yourself. Still very interesting info. Cheers
livebearer_breeder
I very much doubt it is the albino Gene, very hard ot come bye these days, you probably just have the false albinos that are yellowish and have black eyes, trust me when i say this, i have females exactly the same, and whent he fry come out of the gravid spot they have black eyes. Generally guppys drop in the early hours of the morning not at night, and if you want to save more then i would suggest a breeders box that have V in it. PENEJANE
The shop that I go to I have never seen that sort of breeding box that your talking about. I am assuming its the one that you can see in the previous pictures in this thread?? But as I said I dont' want to stress the fish or I will end up with nothing. In these pictures you will see the female I am talking about. Sorry that the images are crap but with a new born bubs its hard to take good pics when you are deprived of sleep hehehehehe. You may totaly be right that when the babies are born they could have black eyes. I don't know but at present I cant' see black eyes. She has two little black spots which don't look consitant with eyes as my other guppies have these same black specks. Here are a couple of pics. Also is the male that I am hoping to breed with a 1/2 black female and with this golden female. Colours should be interesting Cheers
livebearer_breeder
yup thats the fulse Albino, If she had albino fry it would white. Shae

Billaney
Hi Shiuh How do you prepare or buy the beef heart and how much do you feed at a time , i guess it changes with the number of guppies in the tank at the time . Do you rotate the food , ie beef in the moring and blood worm at night or a very little of each at each feed. Your results are very impressive and good on you for keeping noters and shareing the info
shiuh
thanks billaney, i bought the beef heart n liver tucker for $9.95 at animates. or you prepare yourself, the recipe is in livebearer section if you want to refer it. i have 5 females in the tank and feed them a little each time, so i can do more feedings each day. i just do random feeding for the food or particular other. nothing special just make sure all of them being feed well.
