beachy
They are available here in AK all the time, usually around 100-120$, depends where you are though and if you are keen to travel.
David R
Doesnt dragon-fish usually refer to asian arowanas?? (then you can add another 0 to the price you quoted and double it) $120 sounds about right for an arowana, I'd rather pay extra for a black one if you can find one. 3.5" is pretty small, make sure it doesnt have the egg sac still attached and is eating well before you buyit. scoobyjene
yep i think u r right there about the dragon fish.. i would prefer to buy from a petstore than private as u will have some come back.. pity we r at the other end of the country else we'd pop into the nearest store to get an arawona.. Aquatopia
Scoobyjene - what size tank are you contemplating putting this fish in when it is fully grown ?
scoobyjene
we have a very large 4ft tank by 2ft 7 wide by 1ft 8 high.. is this too small?? we have terrapins in it at the moment,, but can find alternative accomodation later on.. Aquatopia
Well at this early stage it is OK sure. But they can get to 2-3 feet in length. I personally think that a fish that size doesn't belong in anything but the largest home tanks, if at all. Its a bit like housing a polar bear in a room the size of a lounge. I can understand how people like them when they are small, but I'm big on thinking about the fish's long term welfare. I have a freshwater video that shows a stunning example. Its kept in a 10' tank. scoobyjene
good lawd! a 10ft tank!!!!!!i bet the floor was reinforced to accomodate that!!...... so sounds like even our largest tank wouldnt be big enough..
Aquatopia
Hey Scooby - dont let just me put you off. What is your largest tank? Do a search on the web and see what others are already doing too. Also, i think that they are slow growing.
buzzy
hi scoobyjene, i have a silver aro and there awsome.my tank is only 4x2x2,i got him from wet pets for $150.i feed him blood worms and a meat mixture, and on the weekends he gets 5 goldfish on each day.hes putting on the beef. hes grown lots since ive had him, hes about 35cm long and about 8 cm high.there a bit skittish if you make sudden movements around the tank(eg like when my sons trying to see him) but when i do water changes i can rub my hands along him and lift him up in the water, and he doesnt mind at all in fact if i put my hands in the tank he will come over to them.i think if you get a smaller one you can watch it grow then have a bit of time to get a bigger tank if you want.you can see mine under the members galliries. beachy
Yep they get massive, my old silver now lives at AK zoo, i sold him to my LFS and he was in their display tank for about a year, he would be over 2 foot now. So a big tank is needed i suppose its a bit like getting a pacu, nice when small, but watch out! silvers are tank busters.
David R
Thats another reason I'd go for a black aro over a silver, they tend to stay smaller. Mine grey from 6" to 22-23" in just over two years, being housed in a 5'x2'x2' tank. I'd say at the very least you'd want something about 6-7' long and 3' wide to house one perminantly, they are active fish and need space to swim unlike some other large fish. I loved my arowana, and will some day keep another one [definately another black one] but that wont be until I can commit to a huge tank for it... beachy
Did your black aro keep its colour? someone told me that they go more silver as they get bigger, i have seen a young one, they are very nice looking.
David R
Yeah he kept some of his colour, could easily tell the difference from a silver aro. This is the only photo I have of it, I think it was around 16" at the time. Where do the auckland zoo keep the aro? I havent been there for a while but dont recall seeing any big tanks... beachy
Apparently they have or are in the process of setting up a 2000ltr aqurium for him, so i am told by my LFS, i havnt been to the zoo yet to check him out, but will soon.He has been gone from my lfs for a few months now.
