yuggib
Any one kept any Halimeda here in NZ? I want some for a planted marine tank. I've heard of some people having it in their tanks as a result of hitchhiking in on frag discs etc. Seems to be hard to come across though! Adrienne
Bryopsis is here in NZ but why would you want a 'pest' algae in your tank?
yuggib
Halimeda isn't really considered by any one to be a pest as far as I know, if it was a pest then wouldn't it be in lots of peoples tanks? It's a calcifying algae so it needs calcium and carbonate dosing to survive, as well as high light. It grows slowly compared to other algae and completely stops growing at 20°C so it doesn't have a chance of becoming introduced to NZ waters. Some hobbyists think of all algae as pests but I think macroalgae is beautiful in its own right!
Adrienne
A lot of marine keepers do love the macro algaes and do have them. I haven't ever heard Halimeda mentioned but I certainly have heard of bryopsis and only ever in derogatory terms. Google tells me they are the same family. yuggib
Hmm yeah I haven't heard much about it either. But if you search it on this website or NZMAS there's some old posts about people having it, mind you these are mostly 5-10 years ago. I was thinking some people might still have some around
livingart
As Adrienne said it was around a few years back in a few tanks but haven't seen it since.
yuggib
Yeah i suppose it wouldnt come in very frequently as it seems like it mostly grows from fairly large chunks. Plus its not that hardy so it wouldnt hang around like caulerpa
