Planned power outage, what to do???

Hi there, hope I have this in the right section.

The power down our street is getting cut off for 6 hours for maintenance, hopefully ends up being less than this. But I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas to keep the fish happy and safe.

I have one 300L (adult and young Africans) and a 200l with baby Africans

Any opinions are much appreciated

Thanks for that, what about the 850 filter? Could I try blocking off the drain hole to try keeping the filter material wet or what? Not that there is much water in that filter at anyone time anyway. Just worrying more about the babies now, my adults are hardy buggers, but in the fry tank I also have a few demasonis just under 2cm long and don't want to loose them

When the power goes off the canister won't pump dry - the water that is in there will remain so. I wouldn't be worried about the media and bacteria in the canister, it will still be viable after six hours. My suggestion, if you are home, is to stir the tank water around a couple of times every hour for about 5 mins. It will allow for gas exchange.

Your other alternative is to purchase a battery powered air pump - specialist shops stock them.

I'd just use it as an excuse to give the filter a quick clean afterwards. I've had a tank wiped out by, presumably, the water in the filter going bad after a couple hour power outage. So I usually switch off the filter after the power has been out an hour, then give it a quick clean afterwards. Mostly just to make sure it doesn't dump any crap back into the tank when the power comes back on.

But, I've also gone 18+ hours without doing anything with no issues.

IMO knowing that it is coming, I'd clean out the canisters a day or two before hand to remove as much physical waste as possible. Changing some of the water in the canister as Hovmoller suggested is a good idea too, the last thing you want to happen is for the canister to turn in to an anaerobic environment and spew a heap of nasty water back into the tank.

Well we had the power cut today...I thought it was Friday and I was away so I panicked a bit when my neighbour rang to let me know it was off.

Fortunately it was only off for about an hour this morning and then when I came home this arvo it went off again but flickered and I think my cansiter is caput. Grr.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, good handy tips for the future
