Okay.. so I have this 4x2x2ft tank arriving next week.. so this weekend is the time where friends get together, purchase some additional powertools for the collection, and generally build stuff :) (there will probably be some grunting and beer drinking as well ;) )

using a link I found on another post in this forum I came up with this as a design.. just thought I would run it past the locals here to make sure it seems all right etc.

It'll be skinned with plywood (thanks Ira :) ), and i'll have cupboards etc in the front.

EDIT: okay, the slide and frypan aren't real :)

Check the legs into the bottom and top strigers to bring the leading edge of them level

the top and bottom nogs to go to the perimeter to form an all around surface and nailing for the ply skinning.

Nail the ply at 150 centers, they are acting as you bracing. (ply that is)

Don't open the bottles till you have finished.

Make sure you have polystyrene under the tank.

OK??

here's how i built mine for the 6ft.

stand_done_side.jpg

Made from 2x4 for the top an bottom frames with 4x3 legs and a 18mm ply top, all nailed with 5" nails and glued with no more nails.

The corners on the top and bottom frames are mitred together, not butted together.

Those 2x4 legs at the back was a precaution cuz i had holes going right in the corners so the 4x3 legs would have been in the way. The whole thing will be lined with baby corro with cupboard doors on the front.

It won't need cross-bracing if the back and sides are skinned with ply. As long as the ply has plent of screws holding it on and maybe even some glue it will be plenty strong enough. I'd also glue the frame together.

It may also pay to but a ring round the top of the stand or extend the sides up past the thickness of the polystyrene to stop the tank sliding off in an earthquake...

I ended up putting 3 sheets of 12mm plywood ontop of each other for the top of my stand!!! (36mm!!!) When we were doing rennovations, I turned the pumps off and started whacking walls out with a sledge hammer. Not even the slightest ripple in the water!
