aotealotl
isn't the bacteria living in the filter dead after a short time without running water and all you will do is boosting dead bacteria into your fish tank ?
Caryl
Squeezing dirty filter water or using old filter media is a common way to kick start a filter.
Ira
Most practical way is just swap filter media, I think. Cup or two of nice shiny new media from your filter in exchange for cycled media from a running tank.
Caryl
Do you have some to spare Ira? Jippy is in Wgtn.
aotealotl
just curious, for how long will the filter media which gets swapped be out of a filter with running (oxygen) water ?
Ira
Do you have some to spare Ira? Jippy is in Wgtn. Already going to be swapping some this weekend, actually. Don't want to swap too much at once.
Caryl
We cycled our son's filter here then took it to Christchurch (it was 5 - 6 hours between being unplugged then plugged in again) and set it up on a new tank, fully stocked immediately with no losses. As long as the media stays wet enough bacteria seem to survive to seed the new stuff.
