gemelee
I am looking for a natural looking sand that won't be to sharp for my kuhli's. There were some bags at bunnings (can't remember the name  ) $9.95 for 20L. It was outside with the gardening stuff not with the concrete sand, so I'm guessing play sand?? Is this safe for kuhli's?
Li@m
Play sand will be safe for your Kuhli's but you will have to wash it about 5 times. Go check out stone and water world, they have fairly cheap sand in a range of colours.
David R
The stuff I bought from Bunnings was Cemix Builders sand, and was about $8 for 25kg. I've had no problems using it with clown loaches, so would think it should be fine for kuhliis. Just don't believe them when it says "washed" on the bag! gemelee
So... ended up gettin Daltons no1 washed sand. The guys at Bunnings reckoned it wasnt as sharp and rough as the cement mix sand. Will this sand work?
disgustipated
i am using play sand from bunnings. you do need to fill and empty the tank a few times to get the water running clear but once it's all clean it looks great. i use sinking pellets to feed my fish. i notice some of them especially BGK have trouble eating pellets off the sand without having to spit out a mouthful of sand... i am wondering if fish ingest sand while eating off sand substrate. calculator
ingesting sand wouldn't be to bad a problem as as long as it isn't sharp it will just pass straight through them and comes out with there poo's. You can get problems with gravel as when they swallow it it can get stuck in there digestive tract causing constipation and possible death. alanmin4304
I use river sand from the local nursery and I would think any inert rounded (not sharp like crusher dust) sand would be OK.
blueether
The tank that my kuhlis are in is 1/2 river sand at the back wher it is planted and 1/2 small river stones, the loaches spend all their time in the stones.
gemelee
Has anyone actually used Daltons No1 with Loaches? I just started washing it and the grain size is quite large, it's not sharp to touch but some bits are a little rough.
Sophia
i am wondering if fish ingest sand while eating off sand substrate. I'm pretty sure they must do. My cories take sand in through their snouts and snuff it out through their gills, I'd have thought their gills would be even more delicate than their digestive systems.
