Question about changing filter sponge

hey all

A few years ago I got a JEWEL 180L, and the filter system has this array of multiple square block sponges that fit in it (about 5-6 of them)

The JEWEL instruction manual warned me I better replace those sponges every 6 months! But I thought that sounded suspiciously like someone trying to pick my pocket so I ignored it

So ya.....a few years later my tank seems in good health. I rarely lose fish. I don't bother to test the water cos I feel that's another fairly pointless expensive purchase (spent $130 on my kit, used it once)

So umm yeah, I guess my question is .....am I doing anything wrong? Do those filter sponge things actually need changing.... ever? The slim white ones that went on the top....well I bought refills for a while then just stopped after seeing someone one here scoffing at them. :dunno:

Only time I've bought new sponges was one time I tried to sterilize a filter by running it in a bucket of water filled with a handful of chlorine.

They went all soft and floppy. Probably nice and sterile though.
