Black Soldier Fly Larvae

Their larva are very nutritious for reptiles and can be used as a staple insect with enough calcium that generally they don't need dusting.

However they are very hard to breed in New Zealand as they are not overly common, and if captured require a large flight area in order to mate.

Biosuppliers had a go trying to breed them to add to their list of insects but had no such luck in being able to produce a sustainable amount.

i had heaps in an old fridge freezer ,which we use to store the garbage to prevent cats ripping into the bags ,outside it was crawling with them . water dragons loved them , alas wifey thought they were maggots and washed them all away :dunno:

i hope i will see them again
