livebearer_breeder
I would say he is a lovely looking VT ( Veiltail ) that has had his tail a bit nipped......very nice colour too! They look abit more like halfmoons to me. Shae
Phillz
Ok so here's my new male Showing off to the older male Are the 2 pics of the same fish? Is he flaring in the pics? I am trying to learn, so trying to look for clues

Phillz
This is a pic of a Halfmoon used with permission from http://www.puggletopia.com Also trying to get my hands on a pic of a Roundtail.....which he could be also?
Nilocagain
Yes Phillz both pic's are same fish in the first pic he is flaring up, He doesn't appear to be fin nipped at all I thought maybe he was part crowntail, now both my males have fry to the same red female. Phillz
Well done on all the fry I don't know if he has crowntail in him as that trait is very distinct. Not sure if I am allowed but here is a link to a crowntail i like. http://www.australianbettaforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7001
livebearer_breeder
Either he's a veiltail who does a very convincing halfmoon imperinsation when he flares, or he does have VT/HM traights. and may i say im jelous Cheers Shae
Fishchick
Philz, some pics of tail types for you: young veiltail blue mask Halfmoon Modern Show Plakat (pronounced plah-cat) Double tail (note the broad dorsal and thicker body) Crowntail - double ray (DR) hope this helps, Cheers, Jodi-Lea

Loopy
What are the "specifications" for a plakat? I have this lovely boy who is the daddy to two cute little babies. i was told he is a "round tail" but that is all i know about him.

livebearer_breeder
Loopy, if you were to ask me i would deffinatly have to say that your male shows the same characterisitcs of a Plaket. Shae
Shelley
What amazing pictures! So beautiful! I LOVE these fish!
Shelley
Niloc....great fish by the way but what I really wanted to ask was about the filter you have. I want a 'soft' filter for the breeding tank. I was told a sponge filter is the way to go so I got one, but the damned thing bubbles like mad in much the same way as an undergravel filter. I really cant afford to be buying more filters right now but want to get the breeding tank set up....it is only a small tank, and I have it only half full of water with no stones....just a few ornaments for hiding places and some floating plants...but NEEEEEED a good gentle filter that will keep the tank clean, help keep it cycled, yet not disrupt bubble nests, breeding fish or the fry once the adults are removed. Nilocagain
I just use a corner filter in my breeding tanks with a hose clamp/valve to reduce air flow. Shelley could you not just raise the air outlet of the sponge filter to almost out of the water(I think this will work, have seen it done) Jodi-Lea those are some very nice looking betta's(I now want more)
mistymu05
i used a sponge filter when breeding and found that just add the extension to the base and it works just fine..... also i found that once the fry were free swimming they didnt mind the bubbles and the ones that did stuck to the opposite end of the tank away from the filter and i just put a small bubbler (on the end of a air hose at their end of the tank to keep the water moving gently and i also used the hose clamp/valve to reduce air flow on both the filter and the bubble maker thingee (very technical terms here)
Faran
Just get a bleed valve for your air tube. You'll be able to control the amount of air going into the filter and quiten it a bit. Good luck!
