Godly3vil
When I am raising fry I always do daily water changes when I can, it does seem to make a difference on growth rate.
F15hguy
fair enough but keep in mind that food makes them grow, not fresh water. Having enough filtration will negate the need for the water changes wouldn't it? no as most filtration only removes ammonia and solids from the water, there is hundreds of other chemicals that build up slowly over time, especially hormones that the fish release some of which directly slow down the growth of other fish. food does make them grow but old water slows their growth... seriously do an experiment of your own and you may be astounded by the results (it takes me around 8-12 weeks to take fry to saleable (3-5cm) size on just high quality dried food, without the water changes takes around 3-4 months) also have you ever noticed how much the smaller fish grow if you remove the largest fish in the tank??? (its quite amazing in africans)
smidey
maybe it's something to do with the fish themselves, i recall reading something about some fish releasing some type of hormone into the water to slow down other fish's growth rate. i wonder if that applies to africans, in saying that mine grow plenty quick enough and i don't see the need to increase that. F15hguy
ok, was researching a good reply but found out that the growth suppressing hormone released by fish can actually slow human growth  also it is a big factor in the fact that fish will grow smaller in heavily stocked tanks with poor water quality two leopard fish born within 2 days, big one gets daily water changes and small one gets weekly, feeding regime is identical, nitrates never reach above 25ppm in weekly change tank, daily change tank never above 15ppm
smidey
mine grow quick as so i see no need to do any of these extra water changes. what's a leopard fish?
F15hguy
otherwise known to you as live food great fun fish for small coldwater setups.
smidey
otherwise known to you as live food why would i know them as feeder fish? wouldn't that be arowana keepers or something like that? the only feeder fish i have fed were red empress
F15hguy
hrmmm.... red empress fry $10-20 each, leopard fish fry, 45L tank, 10-100 per batch, once per month plus heaps of fun

IIRC I was getting around 40 per batch and there were three females holding so the quickly became surplus. like anything, supply and demand. camtang
found similar issues with empress and bumblebees, empres fry/young arnt overly attractive unlike the male so people think twice and there is only so many fry you can sell in one region. but on track, I do a WC once a day for fry after the first week ( dont touch anything in the first week) when I can. but I normaly stop after a month
disgustipated
how are the babies going kaz?
TenyTinyKaz
I saw fry in her mouth just before. She seems to be doing ok. I'm going to set up the spare tank and move her in there today hopefully. She is getting a bit annoyed by the other males (having been a pregnant female myself at one stage, I can relate to that :sml1: ). I wouldn't go so far as to she is stressed but I don't want to let it get to that point. What I'm finding more concerning at the moment is that I have 2 male blues and the more dominent one is beating the c*** out of the other one and I'm thinking I'll need to move the subdominant one today I just need to find a spot in my lill 1 bedroom flat with very few power points to set up the other tank. camtang
you could try pulling everything out, do a water change put everything back in plus more stuff in diffrent more random places to start with. I think if you remove one and then let it recover and reintroduce it, its just going to happen again
TenyTinyKaz
Well, I was thinking of doing like a combination of what you mentioned. What I have got in the tank at the moment is just a random mix of my old aquarium ornaments in the tank which serve their purpose, but looks weird. I have ordered some coral rock and some BNs which I will be picking up when I got back to the Waikato to see the fam for xmas, once I put the rock in the tank they will all have to sort out their places all over again. So I'm thinking, I will give the subdominant blue (namedHarlequin) a break for a couple of weeks let him heal and feed him real well, then when I put all the new coral rocks in do a water change put the BNs in and reintroduce Harlequin and then see how that goes. TenyTinyKaz
Ok second tank is set up. I had to reassure my partner that, no it isn't going to get out of hand just because I've got two tanks in as many weeks, it won't be like last time. :slfg:
