nzfishkeeper
Does anyone know if i can use 'pea metal' gravel for an aquarium substrate? From what i under stand its only crushed river stones. So i don't think it will raise the pH or add any harsh minerals etc. Thanks
Li@m
The Word "Metal" is also another word for gravel. Yes it will be fine. just give a really good wash.
nzfishkeeper
I was just worried about the non-polished edges, Is this a problem?
calculator
If the edges are rough it will depend on what you are keeping, It you are keeping bottom feeders, or fish that spend lots of time on the bottom of the tank it sharp edges might cut them, and cause them harm, if you are only keeping upper water fish I doubt it will cause much problems. F15hguy
I use it without a problem, there is also a rounded form that comes from gisborne im trying to source atm. plants love it, but you need to seriously rinse it and also use your gravel syphon when filling. maybe use a floculant if worst comes to worst as that stuff is DIRTY. nzfishkeeper
Sorry for the long delay in replying, I will have to keep an eye out for some of the rounded stuff. Does anyone have any experience with using gravel from the hutt river? I might be able to pop over and get some of the finer gravel there. F15hguy
have fun and don't get caught, I think its illegal to take gravel from rivers without a permit (or Iwi)
nzfishkeeper
I don't think it should be a problem at the hutt river due to the council paying someone to dredge the river and place the rocks in the harbour. They also hold an annual event where they load up your trailers with rocks and gravel for free, sadly this is in February which is a bit too long to wait. I guess the worst they could do is give me a warning and tell me to put back the gravel.

alanmin4304
Crushed metal is obviously gravel crushed. It is used for purposes such as roading and supporting drains because the sharp edges lock together and it is more stable. I never use it because of the sharp edges---it is really bad for grubbing fish like corries. I have used it as a first course over undergravel filters but always finished with river warn material. Down this way everything is greywacke which is pretty inert so good to use.
