F15hguy
where would I find an adaptor to connect an compaq hard drive to another computer???? it is from a Presario V3000 that has decided to crap itself im thinking its a massive motherboard failure or else the cmos has gone bye bye. just can't get it started at all just a bit of whirring and then nothing, not even a flicker from the screen. seems to be a common problem on these machines. have tried removing all parts one by one and replacing them to see if they have failed and still getting nothing, not even the LED signals or beeps that tell you whats happening
GrahamC
If you're talking about the Presario 3000 desktop and not the laptop, then you can remove the drive and put into an adaptor that has either IDE or SATA connectors, and then plug via USB into another PC. That way you can access the drive contents.
F15hguy
actually the V3000 laptop, but as far as I can tell it has just standard SATA ports with an adaptor. where to buy a sata to usb with external power supply though (easy on trademe but im impatient) kinda scary that googling "presario V3000 laptop won't start" gives me so many of the same problem glad its not mine

Phantom
I buy these things from Dove (wholesaler) http://www.dove.co.nz/products/cables-a ... pters/2987 They work well, come with a power supply and you can connect it to old or new desktop / laptop drives. They're only about $27 +GST wholesale, so shouldn't be too expensive retail. Not sure what stores you have near by. Edit: Any stores you do have nearby should be able to get one overnight from Dove anyway as they're bound to have an account. $27.85 + GST is the wholesale price. Reckon on a 40% markup. 27 * 1.15 * 1.4 + 6.5 = $
F15hguy
im harrassing a trade me guy to give me one for $20, see what happens
Phantom
The other option is to buy an external drive enclosure if you know for sure the size and connections on the drive. They're probably cheaper.
GrahamC
Or, plug the drive into your own laptop ( presume that you have one ), and boot from a linux USB live distro.
Sheepsnana
Bring it round after 5pm, I'll sort it for ya.
#!CrunchBang
If the v3000 is as old as my first laptop, it's a pata connection, not a sata connection. And pata was relegated to history in ~2007/
F15hguy
bah, got a silly lil plastic adaptor in there, just a regular old sata connection. got a external plug in connector on the way to me via trade me (got a couple of other drive's it may be handy for)
amtiskaw
Do yourself a favour - get an external USB drive and get in the habit of backing your data up every week :sage: Use a robocopy script to do a weekly differential backup 8)
Sheepsnana
Buy a Dell one-off, get the full WIN7 backed up to a USB pen, and format any drives with issues  :slfg:
