si_sphinx
I have acquired a 200ltr barrel to cure some coral rock. On the label it says it was used for Farmguard Bactoquat by Orica Chemicals So I did some research and found this PDF... http://msds.orica.com/pdf/shess-en-cds-020-000000008668.pdf It says that it is water soluble so I have washed it out with the hose a few time and can still smell a slight smell of the chemicals. Is there something I can use to clean this better or should I just keep rinsing it until the smell is gone?
livingart
from PDF Aquatic toxicity: Toxic to aquatic organisms. maybe you should find another barrel depending on the plastic used some chemicals can get into the plastic and slowly release
si_sphinx
yea I read that too. hmmm There was another one I could have gotten. It was used for detergent. Would this be better to rinse out and use?
livingart
i have used a few different barrels but all had previously contained food safe products any contaminants can be absorbed by the coral rock and create possible future problems in your setup a lot depends on the grade of plastic used in the barrel some of the ones i have used were blue on the outside but white on the inside
JaSa
Get a 200l drum (ecoLab, FIL) from a farmer in which he had acid (Optimum, Optimum2, AquaKlenz, KlenzAlltemp or Jetset) for his shed. Triple rinse it, fill it right up with water, leave it for a few days and empty it - job done. I have one to age my water in and works fine... si_sphinx
The one I have is a very thick solid blue barrel. 1st grade. Does this mean it may not have absorbed the chemical? I have water soaking in it now. I will leave it soaking for a week and see what it is like next weekend.
livingart
does it have any codes on the bottom hard to see when its full :gigl:
si_sphinx
I emptied it to have a look. Easy enough to fill up again. It has VERTEX written on the bottom. and on the side it has the following 1H1/Y2.0/200 LAB3223 CHHPP/NZ and this symbol http://www.musverpakkingen.nl/en/89-products/81-un-quality-marks-for-barrels-buckets-tin-cans-jerry-cans-etc.html
Caryl
I have thick blue barrels too. They hold around 30L and were used by Resene to bring paint powder in from Italy. All they needed was a rinse.
