donna_b
Hi everyone, pretty much new to fish keeping...bought a full setup on TM 240l tank with 2 angels, 3 loaches and a gourami... its been nearly a month and right from the beginning the female? angel is a husband beater, lol pecking at the male, chasing him around the tank and the gourami as well. they do the 'twitching' thing at each other too. Over the last few days this has changed...the male is now the aggressor...he has claimed half the tank for himself and chases her away. They get into some real ding dongs and I'm glad I have a lid on the tank else they'd both be out on the floor... I can't take anymore, lol...they upset the whole tank and I think I will list them on TM. In the meantime I have a 32l tank and am wondering if its ok to put the female in there...I'm concerned if i put the male in there the female will spend her time chasing the gourami around - what do you guys think???.. the angels are a good 75mm in diameter its a bit hard to judge...the male is your average angel with black bars, the female is silver with orange on the top of her head - she's a lovely looking fish but i cant sit here and watch them beat each other up!! 2 of the loaches dont take alot of notice of them as they are a decent size as well, but the smaller of the three is a bit more sensitive We have decided we'd like to get some smaller fish and grow them on...not sure what type...our biggest conceris the angels... Look forward to hearing your thoughts

F15hguy
sexing angels is difficultuntil you see the spawning tubes males are thin and pointed and females are thick and rounded on the ends. if you cant be bothered waiting till spawning time you can always make them pop out by seriously overfeeding them (don't do this too often as it can cause other issues, and clean up afterwards to avoid ammonia spike) but to my eye they both look like males (looking at the front of the belly and the angle between ventral fins and anal fin, also males are more likely to grow the humpy head) btw... 240L is bare minimum size for what you have atm, especially if the loaches and gourami are a larger species
F15hguy
this is a nice little response http://www.fishchannel.com/media/freshwater-aquariums/fish-breeding/angel-sexing.aspx.pdf
donna_b
sexing angels is difficultuntil you see the spawning tubes males are thin and pointed and females are thick and rounded on the ends.yes i found a really good pic of what the tubes look like - my two dont have the same shape but its hard for me to tellif you cant be bothered waiting till spawning time you can always make them pop out by seriously overfeeding them (don't do this too often as it can cause other issues, and clean up afterwards to avoid ammonia spike)how do i know when its 'spawning' time?? i dunno whether they'll last that long, lol...the male? has little pecks out of him already, i'm scared they will kill each other...but to my eye they both look like males (looking at the front of the belly and the angle between ventral fins and anal fin, also males are more likely to grow the humpy headI'm tending to agree with you...from the breeding tubes it looks like the orange one (who i was told was female) is the male??? If I have 2 males what would you suggest??btw... 240L is bare minimum size for what you have atm, especially if the loaches and gourami are a larger speciesyes i've been told this - hence my thinking of getting rid of the 2 angels for a start, and probly the gourami too....we would love to hold on to the loaches for a wee while longer as they provide us with such awesome entertainment and a nice reprieve from the aggro angels!!! do you think i can shift one of the angels to the smaller tank while i get a listing organised for TM - i know its not ideal but i'm at a loss what to do :dunno: thanks for your help! F15hguy
you will have problems putting a large angel in a small tank, especially if it is uncycled. I would try and put some sort of divider between them, a piece of glass or perspex, a sheet of thick plastic, even a sheet of netting... TM should find you a result quickly, big angels are popular, just don't mention about sexes or try your LFS, they may be interested in doing a trade with you. what area are you in? jamosfish
I would say two males due to the humps on their heads.
