BK
What should I look for in a log to place in my Discus tank. I'm on the West coast of the South Island so lots of native flooding down the river. How long dose it have to be soaked for b4 it can be put in the tank. What else do I have to do b4 putting in tank. HummingBird
The time it takes to be waterlogged varies depending on the type of wood and how long it's already been in the water. To make it sink faster soak it in boiling water with some baking soda in it.
BK
So the main thing is that it sinks. I don't have to try and clean/kill any thing that is on it?
Aqua
The boiling water tends to help kill off any nasties...
Caryl
BK if you are in ChCh how come you say you are on the West Coast? Are you visiting there? I gather my lovely native driftwood from the mouth of the Hokitika beach. All I do to it is give it a good scrub when I get home then add it to the tank. BK
I visit Hoki once every 2 weeks for work and if I'm not getting stones for my tank I'm getting ferns for the garden. Last nigth was drift wood from the mouth of the Hoki river.

BK
The coast is just the best part of NZ, even coming from a townie that dosen't go walk about. Theres a guy at Ross who pulls logs of the beach and mills them for sawn furniture timber. Yes it is also the best place to get stones from even bets Queenstown and central. Do your rallies live at the "pa" Arahuna (sorry about spelling) would love to get some stone from here but off limits as you would know. Caryl
None on the pa as far as I know but I only know one of them as she married my uncle. I know she is involved in treaty claims and such but she owns a motel in Greymouth. Couldn't even tell you the tribe name actually but her father was chief when he died a few years ago.
