RoninBoxers
Greetings! I've recently gotten a few snippets of Xmas moss, so thought I better do some reading about it. I now wonder if I already had some and assumed it was Java Moss. This is a pic of the plant I'm wondering about... The growth is much more regular than any Java Moss I've ever had, looking almost fern like. I don't mind if it turns out to be Java Moss, but if it is xmas moss I won't let it go to waste Look forward to your opinions. RoninBoxers
Nevermind! I think its java moss... Just realised what happened to it to make it look different
HummingBird
So what happened to it then?
RoninBoxers
I think it may be java moss that has been grown emersed
livebearer_breeder
It looks nothing like my java moss, if those pictures are of your plant then Christmas moss would be my guess, however i am no expert, someone else should be able to tell you. Caryl
If roninboxers is correct and it is Java moss grown emersed then you all have a good source of your very own Xmas tree moss at a fraction of the cost
RoninBoxers
It is possible to manipulate growing conditions to make java moss like xmas moss, but not the same. (I read that somewhere so it must be true  ) Dog slobber could be an important factor, this plant sees a lot of it since its in the dogs drinking container hahahaha I really don't have anything to use for comparison yet. Its not just those frond thingis that make it look different but the whole "hunk" of it is in a more layered orderly look than my other "hunks" of Java moss. You'll notice the different coloured tips on it at the top of the picture, I've not seen that on my other Java moss, is it spores or growth tips? When Java moss is grown emersed it is quite bushy and of course doesn't get the long stragly bits it can underwater. Could be a good way to get nice compact groth on driftwood - do it emersed! I've also read that apparently xmas moss will attach and grow directly on the glass where as javamoss wont. this stuff seems quite happy to attach to anything!! Plantman
I've also read that apparently xmas moss will attach and grow directly on the glass where as javamoss wont. this stuff seems quite happy to attach to anything!! Hi Helene i am not sure if it will attach to glass. but with the fish line, it can be attach to any object. and as i grow, the fish line will disappear. Mosses are found in all countries and there are many strand of mosses. maybe you have found a similar strand to Christmas moss. it look pretty close to x'mas moss. i suggest that you seperate the Christmas moss from java moss. keep tieing with fishing line and letting it grow until you have a hand full. Christmas moss itself have many strand. your moss may one day be named NZ X'mas moss. or Helene Moss. hows that sound.
