  1. I still have them. They are a very strong strain and I'm really enjoying them. They are some of the biggest healthiest guppies I have had (though that is the line more than the fact they have ribbon fins :-) I am about to do my first experiment crossing them into another strain to see if I understand how the ribbon tail gene is carried (dominant) in which case it can be added into any other strain relatively easily. Though because of technical difficulties is hard to breed 100% true (working on that too!) Cheers. Helene
  2. Hi All! Thanks so much! Thats awesome. I knew there was someone tops down thwat way :-) Cheers, Helene
  3. Greetings! Quite a while ago I read an article on the forums about a guy in Wellington that builds good tanks at a reasonable price. Anyone have details? Or any other suggestions on someone that builds tanks well at a good price? Thanks! Helene BTW, don't suggest I buy glass and make my own ta.
  4. Would like to know if anyone else finds this auction hilarious??? http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/auction_detail.asp?id=36562240
  5. Hmmm, that sounds very interesting! Could be useful to know, sounds preferable to the AI technique.
  6. Heya Bill! That sounds really interesting!!! You'll have to give us an update in a few months. Your boy sounds like he could possibly be a "swallow" tail. (and no, NOT swallowed by a cichlid! ) They split off and can get a bit stringy, they also have the stringy dorsal fin. He probably isn't a ribbon fin because the males gonopodiums are a mile long and useless! (though there are AI techniques, but thats a whole nother topic) The reason I asked is that I've got a female that is almost certainly a ribbon fin, I've never seen anything like it!! Her ventral fins are well over an inch long!!! An impressive feat given that she's a tiny female (so far). Personally I find it revolting, but I'm not one to pass up a challenge... Would love to know how your reds develop! I see sleepless nights ahead Helene
  7. For lack of a better description they have long stringy fins.
  8. Hi All! Has anyone here ever seen/bred any ribbon tail guppies? Are they something that just pops up occaisionally in normal breeding? Any idea on the genetics of them? Cheers, Helene
  9. Oh no Alan!!! NOW where will you be able to get a breeding pair of platies from?!?!?!?!
  10. You mean it annoys you that you aren't making that profit?
  11. I hope you went back and gave them a mouthful! I surely would've!!! I don't have much experience with mollies, mainly because I was always put off by the sickly look of them. (in the petshop) I recently got my first two direct from their breeder, they are stunning black lyretails - I just couldn't resist! We have our fist babies now too. WARNING - Mollies have HEAPS of babies!!!!
  12. Theres another one now, different seller...
  13. Hiya! Has anyone else noticed the trend on trademe for people to sell platies as mollies? I've seen this quite a few times now!!! I think someone on the forum bought a whole batch of baby mollies, then I saw the same seller with adult mollies that looked terribly much like palties. Are petshops misrepresenting them? Or is the a kind of platy-like red wag tail molly? (If there is that'd be a kinda cool colour ;-) Your thoughts? Helene
  14. I used to have Albino Snakeskins, but was quite a while ago. Will you keep us up to date on any babies you get? I would quite like to try some again if you sell any. Cheers, Helene
  15. Greetings! I know this should maybe be in PTE but thought it would more likely be read by the right people here. Does anyone have some golden australe for sale? Looking for a few to try and breed them. Also, does anyone have Jordanella Floridae? If you can help at all please PM me. Thanks! Helene
  16. Ooooh, I want a yellow one!!!!!! Where did you find her????
  17. Hiya Phillz! Actually, it was after seeing the photos of your beautiful boy that I decided I HAD to have a siamese fighter. Never being one to do things by halves there are now 2 boys and 3 girls here!! I will post photos eventually but they are just having a short quarantine at the moment. Thanks for posting your cool pics to inspire the rest of us Cya! Helene
  18. Greets! Does anyone have any juvenile bettas they would like to sell? I would like to buy 3 boys that are not yet full grown. I'd LOVE green, but red or blue would be nice too. They would each have their own tank and would be for display so promising finnage is a must. So if you have some young boys looking for a home please feel free to PM me with details and prices. I would prefer to have them couriered to me but can also pick up from some places. Regards, Helene BTW, I am flexible on numbers and colours!
  19. Leopard fish are one of the 2 kinds of fish I have :-) They do tolerate cooler temperatures and you need to beware of cold snaps. The mass die-offs could possibly from them getting chilled, they don't do well under 18c. They also like warmer temps to breed.
  20. Might make more sense if it were about leopard fish. They look a lot more like guppies than danios do!! And they are livebearers...
  21. It is possible to manipulate growing conditions to make java moss like xmas moss, but not the same. (I read that somewhere so it must be true  ) Dog slobber could be an important factor, this plant sees a lot of it since its in the dogs drinking container hahahaha I really don't have anything to use for comparison yet. Its not just those frond thingis that make it look different but the whole "hunk" of it is in a more layered orderly look than my other "hunks" of Java moss. You'll notice the different coloured tips on it at the top of the picture, I've not seen that on my other Java moss, is it spores or growth tips? When Java moss is grown emersed it is quite bushy and of course doesn't get the long stragly bits it can underwater. Could be a good way to get nice compact groth on driftwood - do it emersed! I've also read that apparently xmas moss will attach and grow directly on the glass where as javamoss wont. this stuff seems quite happy to attach to anything!! Helene
  22. I think it may be java moss that has been grown emersed
  23. Nevermind! I think its java moss... Just realised what happened to it to make it look different
  24. Greetings! I've recently gotten a few snippets of Xmas moss, so thought I better do some reading about it. I now wonder if I already had some and assumed it was Java Moss. This is a pic of the plant I'm wondering about... The growth is much more regular than any Java Moss I've ever had, looking almost fern like. I don't mind if it turns out to be Java Moss, but if it is xmas moss I won't let it go to waste Look forward to your opinions. Helene
  25. Hi Bill! You aren't being overly harsh, there are ways and eays of doing things. I was similarly underwhelmed especially to the response I got for not having livebearers at the time. (I felt like a right knob ) That said I think its great that there is someone willing to take the time to do something. I presenlty don't have the time or inclination to do that sort of thing, so am glad someone else is Just my 2 cents Helene
