beachy
Hey guys how important is it to have hiding places for fish? e.g they say cichlids like to have hiding places, caves and stuff like that. Ive been to a few web sites looking at peoples tanks from asian countries and most people there dont have anything in there tanks at all, not even gravel. I kinda get sick of my fish hiding all the time, i meen whats the point of having nice fish when you cant even see them? I know its more natural and all but if i take away there hiding places are they gonna freak or will they get used to it? any ideas?
Ira
Most cichlids don't hide all the time, unless they're really unhappy. And having good hiding places tends to make them happy. I wish I had more hiding places in my tank, but it's not easy to make a cave to fit a fish that's 9" long and 4" tall. Maybe I just need more rocks... Alan
Hiding places get your fish to react more naturally If they know that they have a place of refuge, then they'll show more courage and display. It is ALMOST imperative, when breeding cichlids to have a hiding place or two for one or the other. Otherwise you are going to be removing a dead body. That doesn't only apply to cichlids either, the plantings can be classified as "hiding places", also making your tank look more natural. Take a look at the tank in the Xmas tree thread. DiverJohn
Hi Beachy... my tank is 1.1m long and there is quite alot of plants in it. My two silver sharks (7-8") can easily "disappear" amongst the plants. its really kool to see them sneak out throught the leaves if your interested I added some more pics last night - bit blurry, need to work on my photography. http://photobucket.com/albums/v626/DiverJohn/Feb05/
