plecs
I hate this time of year when the flies invade, and have decided it is time to invest in one of those automatic sprays that kill insects. It would be in the kitchen, which isnt near the fish tank, but isnt far either and the doors between are never shut. I also have a bird that i am worried about. had a look at Mitre 10 today and some say remove birds and fish from area, and others dont. does anyone know if any are ok for birds and fish??? or how far it can be from the fish without causing a problem? or should i just put up with the flies????!!!! help please as they are driving me mental!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! plecs
Ira
They're bad for both fish and birds. Maybe if you had the sprayer in a room that's shut off from the fish and brids it'd be ok. You're better off getting something like a bug zapper or a dozen venus flytraps. Oh, and keep the birds safely locked away if you're cooking with teflon coated stuff. What kind of birds do you have? Caryl
I have heard of someone who had one of those auto things at the other end of the room with no problems. I know I spray flies everywhere in the room except the end with the tank. If the tank has a good lid and the filter runs from the cupboard underneath I would hope it would be OK. Fly spray never bothered my budgie but I never sprayed near him either.
Staplez
Get one of these in your house, They don't make a mess because rather then squishing flies it zaps them pretty good. Ive had one for a few years now. If you have kids this will give them something to do to http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics/No ... 985492.htm

Dawn
I had one of those fly squirty things for about a year - it worked fantastically and I could leave all the doors & windows open and never had a fly or a spider or an ant! Then I got my first fish tank and gave the fly thingi to my son - the one I had had a warning on it do not use near fish - if you have two levels in your house apparently it's okay to use it upstairs and have the fish downstairs or vica versa. That's the only regret I have about keeping fish!
agoh
a fyi funny: My parents brought this strange device from china....its a plastic tennis raquet crossed with wires and battery operated...when a fly makes contact it explodes....hours of fun for the children and no chemicals

Alan
Hairspray is bad too. I insist on having two doors, closed, from the fishtank to the contaminant. I have tanks in my lounge and also the spare bedroom/puta room. We stop the ingress of flies by having screens on the front and back doors. Other than that, it's a soft twitch with a fly swat, and my "gold wonders" are waiting with their mouths wide open. For the uninitiated, those are killies. Jo1
We have several jobs in rest homes where they get someone in to spray to protect for several months. We advise them to cover the tank prior to spraying and have never had any deaths.
petplanet
I have used a Robocan for the last year with out any problems. They have two different types of cans - a repellant and a killer. I use the repellant. If you are worried, just make sure you run carbon in your filter.
suphew
I use ripcord, you mix it with water and spray it onto surfaces using an old spray and wipe type bottle, (out of reach like on the ceilling), I only apply it a couple of times each summer and it seems to work. Because it is strayed water not super fine mist it doesn't seem to travel too far. I spray only the dinning room which has the back door that is always open for the dog, there is an open connection to my fish tanks from the dinning room, been doing this for 4-5 years with no problems.
